Introducing the Expedition 40 / 41 Flight Crew.
NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, is a Naval aviator and test pilot. He has a master's degree in
systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University. In 2009, while serving as a Lt. Commander
on the aircraft carrier Eisenhower, Reid was selected by NASA to become an astronaut candidate.
In his spare time, Reid enjoys golf, woodworking and running.
Maxim Suraev returns to the International Space Station. A graduate from the Kacha Air
Force Pilot School 1994, Max received a law degree from the Russian Academy of Civil Service
in 2007. While serving as a flight engineer during Expedition 22, he performed a 5 hour
and 44 minute spacewalk. Max is a qualified SCUBA diver.
From Germany, first time space flier Alexander Gerst received a master’s degree in Earth
sciences from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In 2010 Alex graduated with a
Doctorate in Natural Sciences at the Institute of Geophysics from the University of Hamburg.
He was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009. Alex is a skydiver and a snowboarder.
Reid, Maxim and Alexander are due to launch to the International Space Station aboard
Soyuz 39 in May.
