David, the sweet singer of Israel, did a lot of singing, much of which shows up in the
book of the Psalms. One of the psalms, the Psalm of Praise, the 145th Psalm. David sings
of six great blessings from God in that psalm — there are more, but let's just look at
six of them.
First of all, we have the promise that "The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth
up all those that be bowed down." [Psalm 145:14] Verse 14 How many times you been knocked down?
How many times has God helped you to get up and keep going. God shares His almighty strength
with his people, so that we're never defeated or cast down. He raises us up from the pit
of discouragement and He sets our feet on the solid rock.
Secondly, He satisfieth the desire of every living thing. Verse 16. Whether it be man
or beast or grass of the field - God provides for all of us. Someone has said that if God
blotted out the sun, like He did when Jesus was on the cross, that the whole world would
starve within six weeks. Let's not forget that all good things come from God.
And then, third, David tells us that "The Lord is righteous in all his ways," verse
17. We live in a fallen world so that sin and greed and injustice abound. Sometimes
we wonder if there's any justice at all. But the great God of the universe is righteous
and just, and the day will come when He'll rule the whole world with a rod of iron and,
believe me, there'll be justice.
And then, fourth, we have hope for it declares "The Lord is nigh unto all them that call
upon his name," verse 18. Don't you just love that statement? A statement of fact that God
is nigh unto them that call upon Him. Don't ask me how many times I've called upon that
wonderful father in heaven and how he has never failed me a single time. That's not
to say He has hasn't said no, because sometimes He has to. I've been disappointed but later
on down the road I've seen it to be the very best answer. The most wonderful thing about
the whole thing is that He answered yes. But the fact that He is always nigh, that is,
near me. He is as near as my breath or my heartbeat. He's never out of sight or unavailable.
Oh, I don't see Him visibly, but I know He's there. I know that much because He tells me,
"lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Matthew 28:20 I don't have
the foggiest idea when the world will end, but I know it is going to end. And there will
be a wonderful God and He'll hold me in His arms and heaven will be opened to me. I wish
the whole world would end right now.
The fifth great point of this passage is the fact that He'll also hear their crying, He'll
save them. Verse 19. Two wondrous things here, that is: He hears and He saves. Saint Paul
tells us, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13
So, I called upon the Lord and guess what, I got saved.
David's final point is wonderful, he writes: The Lord preserveth all them that trust Him
and love Him. Verse 20. By that he means, we are eternally saved; it means we cannot
be lost once we come to Jesus. John Chapter 10 tells us that Jesus holds us in His hands.
So I am safe forever in this world and in the next to come.
Yes, this is a beautiful Psalm for all who trust in Jesus. I pray to God that you're
one of them, who trusts
in Jesus.
