Hi I am Archana Arte. So when you think of dal the only dal that comes to mind is tur and chana dal. We never think of masoor dal.
So today we are going to cook masoor dal.
The ingredients you will need include 1 cup masoor dal, 2 tbsp ghee, 1 chopped tomato, 1 chopped onion
7-8 garlic cloves, 1 inch ginger, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder
1/4th cup asafoetida, 2 tsp grated coconut, 10-12 curry leaves, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 5-6 kokam
1/2 tsp garam masala, 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds 2tbsp coriander and salt to taste.
Now we will begin making the dal. First we will put the masoor dal in a pressure cooker.
There is no need to pre-soak masoor dal in water, because masoor dal cooks easily
Just add 1 mug of water to the dal in the pressure cooker.
Right now don't add the other ingredients, we will use them later for seasoning.
3 whistles are done. We will switch of the gas. The dal is cooked. Now we can begin to prepare the seasoning.
Add 2tbsp ghee in a pan, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds, 8-10 curry leaves
1/2 tbsp turmeric powder, 1/4 tbsp asafoetida, here we are not using chilly powder but 1/2tbsp garam masala
2tsp grated coconut. 2 tbsp coriander will give the seasoning a different flavour.
Mix it all together. Then, add 1 cup chopped tomato, 1 cup chopped onion and 3-4 kokam.
Grind the ginger and garlic and then put them in the pan.
Increase the flame and cook the seasoning till the masalas look golden brown.
Now it is smelling great!
Its time to add the cooked masoor dal in the seasoning Make sure the gas flame is high.
Add salt to taste. Put some coriander on top to garnish Incase you want to eat it with rice, add 1/2 mug water to the dal.
Wow this dal looks great. Take it out in a serving bowl. Just add little ghee and its ready to serve.
