Antibacklinkertourvide - Transcript -
Andy: Hi, this is Andy Bailey, let me show you how the anti-backlinker plug-in will work.
Now before I do show you how it works, itís important to remember that all of these things
are optional only. You donít have to put any kind of Draconian measures in your comments
just to be able to let people comment on your site. This is only if youíre getting bothered
by too much semi-automated spam or manual human spam that are people just searching
for a backlink where they just type any old crap, just to get the link back to their site
from the Commentluv link.
Okay, now this is my website, Iíve been testing the plug-in here and itís been doing really
well. If you can see here, Iíve got 23 comments. Now normally, I see numbers in the region
of 75 to 100 because this site is very busy. But since Iíve been using the anti-backlinker
plug-in, itís dropped dramatically because it has features in there which show the spammers
that are using bots and things like that that they are not getting through to my site. The
most comments that someone can make before I approve them is three comments.
So let me show you how the plug-in works by basically moderating the comments that Iíve
got on my site and using some of the functions.
Now, the first comment youíll notice is that someone, Erm, Hanky Christianto, now this
person hasnít got a gravatar and they havenít got enough approved comments. You can see
that theyíve only got one comment there. And so this red, dotted box around the outside
of their link is just there to let you know in the admin why that link is not showing
on the public side and what you can do about it, whether theyíve got a gravatar and the
other criteria that you can set in the AB link tools.
Because if you click here, you can add them to the white list and if I did that, then
..let me show you, this person gets added to the white list. Now, if I refresh the page,
you can now see that this person is white-listed and there is no red box around their comments.
So, everything is looking fine. And if I click this little green X, that removes them from
the white list. If you made a mistake oon anything that you do, you can always click
on undo and it will do the opposite of what you did.
So let me refresh the page again, and you can see that itís hidden the link. Let me
click through to that comment, if I right click here and open it in a new tab, youíll
be able to see it; this is their exact comment. You can see that the name is not linked and
there isnít a link for the last block post. And if they were to put their Twitter name
in, then it wouldnít show that, either. So, when I white list them, then it will show
them the links.
Do you see?
So if youíve got your settings set that someone needs at least three approved comments before
they can get any links in their comment. Then, as soon as they reach three, then you can
make sure that their links show. And all that is saved along with their comment and so when
they are checked again, then they will start showing the links once they reached that limit
of approved comments.
Okay, letís go through a few comments and deal with them as I deal with them on a normal
moderation thing in my morning chores. Letís have a look here; I canít even say that name,
letís have a look and scan the commentÖ Right, this is just not making sense, that
comment so letísÖ this person has already got four spam in my spam queue. So what Iím
going to do is, Iím going to go into AB link tools and then Iím going to add them to the
black list. Once thatís done, I can spam the comment and then any more comments from
that person will go straight into spam. I wonít even have to moderate it.
And this was an idea by Kim Castleberry when she was testing, to let me know, or let you
know when someone is commenting, how many theyíve got already got in spam. Now bear
in mind that your spam folder gets emptied regularly. So if theyíve got letís say three
spam, then you know that theyíve spammed you three times and itís pretty safe to black-list
them.
So be careful with the spam and adding people to the blacklist because that has to be checked
every time someone submits a comment. So if youíve got ten thousand emails in there,
then thereís just going to be a little bit of a performance issue. So try to use your
common sense. Basically black-listing someone is a last resort when you could also send
them something because this person has one spam but two approved comments.
So, okay, now this is a legitimate comment. It is a little bit spammy, but I think it
is a legitimate comment. And because my settings are set to give people links after three approved
comments, if I approve this comment, then sheíll be able to comment without any kind
of approval next time because she passes every other criteria.
So, what I like to do if someoneís a bit spammish, you know, maybe they just misunderstand
how commenting works, what I do is click on AB link tools and then I go ímoderate future
comments.í And there we go, itís ímoderate future comments,í I can approve that, no
problem and instead of getting auto-approved on her next comment, she gets moderated as
well.
Kind of like a sin bin.
Let me refresh the page and Iíll show you how that appears. Now, this link still isnít
showing because she hadít got enough approved comments at the time she commented because
thatís when it stored. Otherwise the program will have to count how many comments this
person has every time that comment is displayed. And that is just a ridiculous amount of resources
required to do that.
So what the plug-in does is it counts every time that they make the comment and then once
the comment is displayed and itís been at least a week since that comment was last checked,
then it will check it again and if itís found that she, or he has made enough approved comments,
it will unlock the links. And that way you donít get someone thatís being really nice
and makes good comments for the first three comments just to get approved and get their
links showing and then suddenly they start spamming again so you have to wait at least
a week just to see if youíre links are showing on your comments.
Spammers donít like to wait! They need immediate results to get paid
So thatís okay, I donít have to worry about her.
letís have a look here; Thomas Ford. Now you can see here, itís not showing the Twitter
name, and this link is not showing, either. Because that person has no gravatar and not
enough approved comments. So this has to do with excercise and stress levelsÖ Now this
is obvious spam. So what we do is, we spam it. And now Iím not going to add it to the
blacklist yet for the first time because if you remember, I said itís more of a last
resort and that person hasnít previously spammed so maybe theyíre just trying to do
backlinks for someone and they probably wont be back
And then, continuing, right, now this is a spammy comment but it is not pure spam. This
is just someone saying íHelloí and theyíve got a link to their website. So if I click,
control+click that link, we can have a look at their website. You donít have to do this
for every comment, Iím just doing it for the sake of showing how it works.
Now you can see that this person doesnít really have an idea, no. So itís spam. Letís
spam it there. And then you go through all of your comments doing the same sort of thing.
Iím not going to bore you with that now, Iím going to take you to the anti-backlink
there. Now this will show only if youíve got the latest version of Commentluv Premium
and if youíve installed the anti-backlink plug-in. I havenít made it part of the core
code yet, but I will do once I do all the modifications to Commentluv Premium so that
it is much more efficient in the way it includes files.
So if I click on anti-backlink, and you can see here, this is the main settings page.
Now this is the video that you clicked, you can see the video, all the extra details,
the exclusive offers, blah-blah-blah. Let me show you how it works. This was the first
thing that I put in; gravatar check. Because I noticed that 95% of the people that spammed
my site didnít have a gravatar. So this was originally what the anti-backlink plug-in
did. It just checked the gravatar. Iíve since added a lot more features due to feedback
by the amazing beta testers Kim Castleberry and Adrienne Smith.
So, obviously the tick box; itís not going to check that gravatar if you untick it. And
this is the action: we can warn the user, but still let them comment, or we can completely
deny the comment. Now this is a bit extreme, this is only to be used if youíre getting
massively spammed by people with no gravatars. So I leave it at íwarn userí and then you
can send the comment automatically to moderation. And thatís a good idea. Because when someoneís
got no gravatar, thereís a 95% chance, at least for me, that they are spamming. So,
I like to moderate it and then I can decide whether to let them through or not.
And then; íHide links, if set to warn.í Obviously, thatís the same sort of thing.
And then this message here, you can do as a visual message in html, whatever you prefer
to do, you can use the visual editor and that is the message that will show.
So let me show you what that looks like for someone who has got no gravatar. Let me go
to an incognito window, to open the site so it shows the comment form, click through to
the post, íthe best way to get out the most from your guestblog postí and then go all
the way to the end and put in an email that has not got a gravatar. Letís just put in
a D here, I havenít registered that with a gravatar. Now I wonít put comluv because
Iím on comluv already. So thereís no need to use that. So letís put in fiddyp.co.uk.
Ehm, I have to put my name in andÖ if I put a Twitter name there, then that will be linked
as well.
Now when I click into here, this is when the magic happens. íNo gravatar.í So this is
the warning and now itís basically saying íYouíre not going to get any links, but
thanks for your comments, it will still go through, when youíve got a gravatar, let
me know.í Or it can be white-listed. Now this is where it shows here, above the links
where someone will click the links, okay?
Now if you want to do a pop-up, you certainly can. So let me show you what it looks like
with a pop-up. So if I go down here, if I scroll right down, you can see here; where
to show the warning message? If I do it as pop-up and save settings, and then refresh
this page and put in the same details again, letís put a D thereÖ you can see, when it
fetches the posts, it discovers that I havenít got a gravatar and it does a pop-up which
is a little bit more extreme. From some of the feedback that I had off Adrienne and Kim.
Theyíve said that there is a bit of confusion here with the commentors. Someone sees this
pop-up and they go íOh my God, itís calling me a spammer.í They donít actually read
the text, they just go, íblahhh!î And then they send emails to the blog owner. So, pop-ups
are really only useful if you want to shock people when youíre really getting a lot of
spam.
And to be honest, when I was using a pop-up, it dramatically reduced the amount of comments.
Because letís be fair, if someone is going to panic when they see this pop-up and donít
read it and not pay attention to what it says, then theyíre obviously not paying attention
to what your blog is about or your article. So, why should you pay attention to their
comment?
But that is a bit extreme, so what I like to do now is put it above the badge. Here,
above the badge. And save settings. Again, this is checked at the time of the comment
so if you are looking at your comments and you ever see no gravatar but they do have
a gravatar, then that tells you that the plug-in is actually working because at the time of
the comment, there wasnít a gravatar. What theyíve done is, theyíve read the message,
theyíve gone off and got a gravatar and then they might have left another comment. But
at the time of that comment, they didnít have one and that just proves that it works.
Okay, so, on to the next settings. Count moderated check. Now this is really super useful for
stopping yourself from getting flooded with spam from the same spammer. Iím sure youíve
gone through it, youíve entered your comments and thereís like three hundred stupid comments
from one stupid person about some ***. So what Iíve done is; Iíve allowed you to
enable a moderated comment count. And this is a more advanced version than the free one
that you get with GASP.
You can choose the amount of comments that someone can have in moderation and then if
they try to make another comment when theyíve already got this number of comments in moderation,
it will show this warning and it will deny them. Okay, this isnít a warning, this is
an actual denial. By denying it, it completely stops you from getting flooded by one spammer
on one crappy thing. This has been really useful!. I can tell you that.
And plus, for the new wave of automated spam, or automated comment software like scrapebox
and others, what they do is they try to do seven, eight or nine comments all over your
blog with different posts and different keywords. And this just stops them completely and they
stop coming to your site. I have seen that to be true and it really is a useful piece
of kit.
The next one; this is the more advanced part of denying links. Okay? Youíre not denying
them comments, youíre just denying them a link back. And by doing this, there are no
links showing on your page after they submit their comment.
And the automated comment systems that I talked about earlier, they have a learning module.
So theyíre able to detect what things are in your comment form that they need to send.
So sometimes they can send those gasp secrets or those extra little hidden fields that are
added by anti-spam plug-ins. So those are basically useless now. If someoneís using
one of these automated comment systems. These things deny links and this will punch them
in the face. Because when their comment is submitted, even if theyíve been auto-approved
before, if they havenít followed this criteria that youíve put in here, which Iíll explain
in a bit, then their links wonít show. And the automated commenting software that theyíre
using checks the next page to make sure that theyíve got their links. And because this
has removed the links, there are no links there, there is no value in commenting on
your site with spam. So you remove the links, you remove the incentive to spam.
Let me explain some of the things in here. Now this is a bit extreme; only white-listed
people get links. You know what I mean by whitelists, I showed you, click on AB linker
tools and click on íadd to white list.í Okay, so only those people will get links.
And thatís fine because people can still comment, they can still write out what they
want, but they wonít get any links back until you decide to authorize them and you can make
that as part of your íjoin the clubí or ísubscribe to my list and get white-listed,í
or whatever you want to do as an incentive to whitelist people apart from you know, making
good comments, you can do.
And then this bit here, this is a little bit extreme, too. This is íonly people with Commentluv
get links and/or Commentluv Premium.í And thatís only to prove that they are bloggers.
Because if theyíve got Commentluv, then theyíve got a blog. Itís a no-brainer. But again,
only use this in extreme circumstances when youíre getting hammered with spam.
Now this is what to do with a comment. You can send it to moderation so you can decide
later what to do if they fail the criteria, or you can send it straight to spam, or you
can deny the comment. Now let me show you what that looks like for denied comments.
So if i do it just here and then only white-listed people will get links and save settings, and
then go to the incognito page again, and fill in the detailsÖ íThank you but you failed
the following criterias: Sorry, but until youíve been white-listed, you wonít get
any backlinks on your comments.í
Okay, I click this, then you can see, it removes the comment form completely. So they canít
submit a comment. And this will also work if they donít have a blog to post in, if
they try to submit the comment without Commentluv, then it will still deny their comment and
just tell them to *blows raspberry* I just switched that off because I donít want to
be denying comments to regular people.
So weíll just do that, untick the box and then save the settings and this is very important.
After you save your settings, you must delete your cache. Because if you donít, the pages
that are being shown are using the old settings. Before you saved them. Once you save them,
delete your cache which shows fresh pages without the old incorrect settings on, okay?
So if itís not behaving properly, donít forget: clear your cache.
Now, here we go here, only people who use a root domain get links. Because how many
times do you get comments from people with a direct link to one post on a forum somewhere.
Now this wonít trigger the alert when someoneís using a blogspot or aÖ what I mean by root
domain, I mean something-something.com and then forward slash, nothing else after the
forward slash. So no direct link to a post, or direct link to a particular product on
an Amazon shop.
So Iíve got that ticked because I found that spammers generally put in really deep links.
Now you have to use your own initiative on this, if people are putting non-root links
into your thing but they are genuine comment lovers then you might want to untick this.
Now this is the amount of already approved comments. This is really super useful for
me because how many times have you approved one comment and then their future comments
get approved automatically and then they just spam you?
So theyíre nice for the first day and then theyíre just an idiot for the rest of the
time. What this does is, it requires them to have at least three good comments that
you moderated already to get links.
And it will show it and it will send it to moderation if they havenít got enough approved
comments so that no links show. Okay, now youíve already seen how this works, but nothing
up there, it will get shown after the comment is submitted or you could show them above
the Commentluv links or you could show a pop-up like youíve seen. Now what I do because mine
is set above the Commentluv badge Iíve put here: íChoose a post below and it will be
shown in the comments once you have been white-listed or passed the criteria.í
So these are the reasons that they failed and then it tells you to choose a post below.
Because itís above the Commentluv badge, of course the posts show below the Commentluv
badge.
Now this is a very useful feature that Kim suggested. It lets you automatically white-list
people. And not white-list them, but give them VIP status which treats theme the same
as if they had been whitelisted. So if youíve got contributors that submit posts to your
site, now obviously you donít want to put them through the same hoops of fire and jump
and stand up on one leg just to get approved, so contributors get VIP status.
Now if someone does leave a comment and is a VIP, if theyíre one of these things, it
will show next to their names. Or you can share or find a contributor here, there you
go. You can see that Karen is a contributor. And so that helps you when youíve got short
posts like thanks for your comment and then you realize that that person is a contributor
and they are responding to a comment made on one of their posts. And you can see again,
there íin reply toí.
So those are all the settings for anti-backlinker. Now let me show you whatÖ this is all the
people on the white list, all the emails that are in this box get automatically white-listed.
If you havenít white-listed anyone, you may want to go through your comments and see the
regular people that arenít members of your site and white-list them so they donít have
to go jumping through the hoops of fire and stand on one leg whistling with their ears.
*chuckles*
Now this is the blacklist. Letís have a look here. Now these are all the email that are
on the blacklist. Now if I have a look here, if I go to settings and discussion, you can
see that this is the blacklist. Now itís got lots of other things like this as well
on the blacklist. But anti-backlinker will only show the emails that are on that backlist
in this page. Because that is the only thing that it uses to determine whether they are
on the blacklist when youíre using AB linker tools.
Okay, now this is exactly the same as this backlist. Just only the emails are showing.
Okay, now the moderatedÖ again, itís compatible with your own moderation. Okay, so these are
the emails that appear on this bit here. This stuff is in comment moderation so if I update
this, you know I can do something like that, save changes and now it will be shown in the
moderated list here. Anything that I changed, as long as thereís an email, it will show
that.
Okay, now those are all the different settings, let me show you again about these tools. Letís
see, ooh, thereís one here. Heís got no gravatar, heís not using a root domain, as
you can see, this person is trying to link directly to a product on their site. íThanks
for posting such nice information.í íAh, thank you for your compliment.í íShut up,
spammer.í *chuckles* Iím just going to spam that person.
Okay, then Iíll go to page two. And we can see here, not enough new comments but they
have a gravatar, this is kind of a spammy comment. Itís a useless comment. It doesnít
contribute to the article, it doesnít add to the value of the article at all. Itís
just basically someone putting a link into their name. And we can see this person has
one spam, again, itís a bit of a crappy comment. But again, itís okay, itís not, you know,
but theyíve already done one spam so Iím going to spam you again and make sure that
you do leave a good comment next time otherwise youíll get black-listed.
And then you go through all the comments. Letís have a look here. This personÖ Okay,
so that is an okay comment. Because they have got no gravatar, I canít approve it and the
link wonít show. Now this person, they are moderated so I put this person on the moderation
list previously because they did have some kind of spammy comments as well as good comments
so I didnít want to auto-approve them every time they make a comment, theyíre put on
the moderated list. Now that is okay. So, I can approve them.
Now if I wanted to; if this person was making lots of comments with keywords or something
like that, if I go to AB linker tools, I can politely refuse the comment. Or basically,
this just emails the person. So this email is hardcoded in there, you can put in any
subject you like but where it says blogpost name, it will be replaced with the actual
blogpost name and again here, you can put in the reasons, itís automatic. If you just
click send, it will tell them íThank you for your comment but you failed the following
criteria:Öí Or you can change this to whatever you want. Or if you are the kind of guy that
is aggressive, you can say íStop commenting, you ***!í *chuckles* But thatís not really
a good idea, you donít want to *** someone off on the internet because maybe theyíve
got nothing better to do than to try and destroy your site.
Okay, so you can send them a message, or the last few things are; you can find all the
comments by this user. Now this is really useful because if you are just about to approve
someone for the third time but you donít know if they spam or not, if you click this
link, that will tell you every comment that that person has made. And then you can see
what type of comments this person has, how many comments theyíve made and whether theyíre
worth approving and removing off the moderated list. So when instead of here, theyíre on
the moderated list, so what I can do is I can approve them and then you can see heís
not moderated anymore. So any future comments that he goes through, because heís made so
many good ones, he can be automatically approved.
So there you go, thatís how the anti-backlinker plugin works, all the different settings that
you can set, all the different messages that you can do and all the different criteria
that you can set. You can make it easy or as hard as you like.
