Little girl: Here goes my part.
Mary reading to kids: The butterfly rests on the garden wall, then she opens her wonderful
wings.
Mary: I started being involved with Next Door Foundation back in 1988. I had been on a committee
that gave scholarships out to teachers in the Milwaukee Public Schools asking them for
things that they had needed, and one of the things that they needed were books for their
kids.
Mary reading with kids: All of a sudden, there came a ROAR!
Mary to class: I started in Orlando, Florida, so put a dot there on your paper.
Student: Is this an ocean? Mary: Thats an ocean. Youre right!
I live in Mequon. My kids had great schools. And, when I come down to the city and I see
the inequities what they dont have here, it really, to tell you the truth, it breaks my
heart to see. And, having that possibility in the back of their minds early on so they
can work hard is kind of one of the reasons that Im really involved because I want them
to have that hope.
Mary to student: Start dreaming about where you want to go someday because its a big world
out there.
Carol: In ways that not so many people do, Mary recognizes, she sees problems, she identifies
them, and then she brings people together to solve them. And, she does it in a way that
you hardly know that shes doing anything. Shes so modest. Shes so genuine. Shes so real.
I deeply appreciate that shes taken her long history with the School of Education and UWM
and is helping me learn more and do more as a result of knowing Mary Kellner.
Mary to class: I saw peacocks, yeah I did.
Mary: I always saw UWM as a gem in the community. I had been an elementary school teacher for
a couple of years and then when I moved to Milwaukee, I decided to get my masters in
guidance and counseling. It was a fabulous experience. I loved UWM and had some great
teachers. I was in a class probably my second year that was called developmental counseling
and the little light bulb went off in my head and I said, this is what I want to do. Thats
sort of what Ive spent the last 20 or 30 years doing when Ive worked with kids is more or
less in life skills.
Mary to class: You go to college, youll learn a lot, youll get a good job, you can go on
some great trips just like I did.
Mary: Just to see their little bright lights and just kids in general, I just get a high
being around them. Theyre just great. Thats something that tugs at my heartstrings to
see them learning and loving learning, thats important to me.
Mary reading to kids: But, the blackbird says, no thank you, its worms I like the most.
Mary to kids: OK, lets see, are there any more pages here? I think thats the end. Thats
the end.
