A quote from Minoru Yamasaki, who is the chief architect for the World Trade Center: "World
trade means world peace and consequently the world trade buildings in New York had a bigger
purpose than just to provide room for tenants. The World Trade Center is a living symbol
of man's dedication to world peace. Beyond the compelling need to make this a monument
to world peace, the World Trade Center should, because of it's importance, become a representation
of man's believe in humanity, his need for individual dignity, his beliefs in the cooperation
of men, and through cooperation, his ability to find greatness."
We'll never forget the unselfishness and compassion with which the rescuers, firefighters and
police officers took on to their task to save lives that very day, not minding their own
lives
September 11th is now known as a day of service. To me, serving means taking time to notice
your surrounding community, to notice the changes that need to take place, and to say
to yourself this is my community, my country, how can I make a difference.
In passing this morning, former governor Cuomo used the word "excelsior", the Latin word
"ever-higher", the state motto for New York. It is indeed a wonderful word, and in our
journey of remembrance, healing and change, I would add the Latin word "pax" to "excelsior".
Where do we go from here this morning? Excelsior pax: ever-higher peace.
