MARINE EXPEDITIONS
We know so little about those tiny fishes,
measuring but millimeters, centimeters.
We know very little about what is on the bottom of the sea.
Therefore, the expeditions are planned
a long time in advance,
a period in which we calculate the transections,
the transects.
This is all calculated in advance 10 00:00:49,485 --> 00:00:52,163 so we can meet this timetable
in a period of ten,
fifteen days on board.
The team is composed...
We have two lines: by largely experienced professionals,
not only in the art of being on board,
but also in identifying the animals,
and also by a part that is being trained.
Because, after all, you only gain experience if you take part,
if you are engaged, involved.
Basically, we pick our partnerships based on
what we have available,
of good quality on the market.
Whether, possibly some partnership
with a private institution,
or, mainly, with the universities
and public agencies.
The partnership with Petrobras’ Cenpes
was extremely valuable, useful,
since it made the embarked means of transport available,
the vessel itself, you know?
In this case, the ships.
The Brazilian community lacks
major scientific surveys,
particularly in the offshore environment,
because it is always extremely expensive to
carry out a very big scientific study,
in the marine environment.
So, the interest of the company
- and in this case, in this type of project we do...
is related directly to this -
minimizing the greatest possible extent the impact,
or the potential impact of our being there.
And we can only minimize it
if we know where we are,
if we know what is around there.
So, I think this is part of the
Company’s socio-environmental commitment itself:
Getting to know and respecting the environment where it operates,
and, obviously, the communities involved there.
The data generated by the expeditions
that compose the environment under the Biomaps Project
are collected by the specialists who are on board.
The species is identified,
the visual identification, body spot pattern,
by fin patterns.
These data are filled-in,
they are brought up in the form of field spreadsheets,
and these field spreadsheets are then brought
to the Research Center to be validated
by the area specialists.
This generates...
Has generated, generates and will still generate
a mass of data that is worked on,
re-worked on, several publications.
Several that have already been made and will yet be made, you know?
The data that will be there are sure to be
useful for a broad range of people,
from researchers, to kids.
In sum, before anything else, I think we need to get to know
such an extensive, vast, huge coast!
And I believe the ocean is still the last frontier.
We don’t know it yet.
