Every day there are fewer and fewer job opportunities in the region of Piura, especially for young
people. One of the reasons young people drop out of
school is the limited relevance, especially in secondary education to help them get started
in their new lives. Only 15 thousand young people in the area gain access to a non-university
higher education, like technical institutes, 5 thousand to an occupational education and
7668 to a state university education.
That is why since 2011 the LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP project has been implemented in the community
of Sojo in the district of Miguel Checa, located 61km from the city of Piura, northern Peru.
This project is sponsored by Plan International in cooperation with the District Municipality
of Miguel Checa, the Regional Education Directorate, the Regional Government of Piura, the Local
Education Management Unit of Sullana and district's educational institutions at the primary and
secondary level.
After being trained in the LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP project we incorporated into our institution
a new task with students, organising them so that they develop projects based on their
own initiative. Students have understood that this helps us deal with our lives later on.
I feel that young people have changed their ways of thinking; even us, teachers, have
changed our ways of thinking. Before we thought our role was solely giving knowledge, only
developing the cognitive part of our students. Now we see our role not only to develop the
cognitive part, but also the drive part, their entrepreneurial skills as well.
With this the students have had to take initiative. The students had to organise themselves, make
designs, learn to formulate budgets. The students have had to overcome difficulties such as
their fear of handling tools. The students have learned, apart from entrepreneurship,
to raise their self-esteem, to take initiative, also to manage projects, and most importantly
to imagine that all dreams are achievable through entrepreneurship.
So that makes the student form integrally giving them the tools they need to enter into
this globalised world.
I am pleased because, thanks to this LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP project, I have developed
abilities such as creativity, being a leader, and perseverance. Maybe when I graduate from
this educational institution, later on, I will be better prepared to face challenges
from the life that awaits.
I think that before, parents, saw their daughters and marginalised them putting them off to
one side. They told them what they are not able to do that men are. On one hand, they
believed them to be less value than boys. But not now, because us women are showing
that we can do the same things men themselves can do or better than them.
They acquired skills to be able to face the challenges presented to them. The boys are
assistants, for example, to the welding and carpentry workshops. And many even, two or
three, have their own workshops, but not in the area, but in other places; some have even
moved all the way to the capital of Peru, Lima.
Students learn to make their dreams come true. [Rosita Ipanaque, 5th year secondary student]
I am sure that if I decide to, I can form my own company and not only see progress for
myself, but also for my district.
Given the achievements of this project, we as a Municipality and I as Mayor and also
with the team of governors, commit ourselves to support the expansion of this project so
that the young people of our district are well integrated into our society.
Just as in this Community, this experience is being developed in 69 educational institutions,
benefiting 11 thousand students, 650 teachers and 800 young people that were not able to
complete secondary education. We strengthen social and economic entrepreneurship abilities,
developing abilities such as creativity, self-confidence, perseverance, rights and responsibilities,
saving and responsible spending. At the end of this training program they end up learning
a technical skill that allows them to effectively enter into the labour market.
