Q: What anaesthetic is used during a Facelift procedure?
Adrian Richards: What anaesthetic is used in a facelift?
Well, this can vary really according to the type of facelift. It can vary from the most
simple, from a simple local anaesthetic to a general anaesthetic. The more straightforward
mini techniques, such as one stitch facelifts, are performed under local anaesthetics. MACS
facelifts can be either performed under sedation and local anaesthetic, or a general anaesthetic.
Most surgeons favor a general anaesthetic for the longer, more dramatic facelift procedures,
which can take up to four hours to perform.
So really, we take into account your preferences, and will have a good discussion with you about
the pros and cons of each technique and the pros and cons of each anaesthetic technique.
If you were very keen on not going to sleep, having twilight sedation, for most patients
this is possible, and in fact their recovery and the risks are probably slightly less with
twilight anaesthesia. So probably the best thing to do is come in and we'll have a good
discussion about the different types of facelifts available, and also the anaesthetic options
for you.
