ELTE Social Sciences Faculty presents.
What is
Social work all about.
After I finished college I started to work with psychiatric clients
but I always have had the wish to work with naughty kids.
These young people are full with energy and they do sometimes aggros and there are gang wars
and there are really gang wars here in Budapest, you do not believe but there are.
They make graffities and other stuffs to use up their energy.
Or we give an alternative forum to these energies.
To establish a trustful relationship with these guys to make them confident to bring here their daily problems.
For instance they could tell us that "I went on pot and I can not give it up"
or to tell us that "I broke up with my girlfriend and it is not good for me."
In my opinion it is needed to open yourself to them.
I think it also possible to cry in front of these guys.
So this is the kind of relation and it does not make any difficulties for me.
I can be trustworthy by presenting here how I really am.
I also bring here my own hobbies.
I bring here the rock climbing, hiking, rowing
and I do not think that these overlap each other and are inappropriate
because I do not skate with the guys in my freetime and do not climb the rocks, everything has its own time.
This is an institution where there are children with medium and multiple severe disabilities.
I have been a sport teacher here for 3 years. Since last September I have been a family and care manager in the department of the institution.
My main goal have been to integrate the children with psychosocial disabilities to children without disabilities.
I mean, to find free time programmes where children with and without disabilities can play sports together and spend free time wisely.
For instance from handcraft activities til different events in the city.
My own goal is the same because I participate in championships among people without disabilities.
There are situations when you are responsible that you stepped into such a social situation or any disadvantaged situation
but these kids can't help it!
It is really difficult to manage both duties as an active athlete.
I think, if life brings it so that I will participate in championships on an advanced level.
I will still try to help these kids in some way.
In many cases it is only needed a small hug or just simply care about these children.
They are more emotionally active, and they need more love.
Especially kids under state care. Those who have grown up not in a family those who have been with us since their young age and now they are almost 20 years old.
We are the family for them.
We try to teach these young people consciousness, temperance, and to be felt useful.
These are presented not as lectures or presentations but these are common discussions built around specific themes.
I am very curious and I am interested at human interactions.
So I decided to gain more knowledge. That is how I have became a social worker although in my family there is a line who are "helpers" but it is not social work.
The first social work training in this country has started in 1990.
If I remember correctly, teachers from the Bárczi College came to the Eötvös grammar school, located in Tata to speak about the social work department.
I opened the information book of the higher education in spring. I have chosen the Bárczi. I submitted my application form. I passed the entrance examination and I got accepted.
The first class I participated as social work student was a class of Bánfalvi professor called basics of sociology.
I was in five minutes late, but when I sat there and listened to him I have realised that I'm at the right place.
I have been working on this field for 16 years. I tried several parts of this field.
In the last 6 years I worked in the day care and community care of people with psychosocial disability.
Right now We are in the Matéria Club House of Soteria Foundation.
Everybody who is using our services has some kind of psychological illness.
Our club members can surprise us on many unbelievable ways.
For example by organising programmes for themselves, where they invite us also sometimes. I think it is totally all right this way!
My field of interest is human relations systems.
So here I can do my work as a hobby and as a profession in the same time.
But there is no doubt about it, that many of my colleagues have some kinds of saint manias, and these can influence the life of this club house in many exciting ways.
We had a colleague, who was an amateur astronomer and he made incredibly good astronomy lectures for our club members.
He talked about the UFO theory as well, which totally started the fantasies.
My contribution is, that I will stay here, and until I can I will be with them, and we will try to get over the crises.
Obviously I can not give money or senior pass,
but until we can make a bread with butter and go out together to the Margit Island to forget about the circumstances.
I will stay here and say „let's go out together"!
This Institution, where I work is the Pálos Károly Social Service Center, Child Welfair Services, Families Temporary Home in Szombathely.
It has been 5 years since I started to work here in the Temporary Home.
We are paying attention to the job lists, the jobs at the Job Service Center.
We have contact with the unprofessional Labour Agents, we pay attention to their position opportunities
newspaper advertisements, so we are trying to be up to date and offer the newest jobs to our inhabitants.
The lower floor of this big house is the Temporary Home.
Is common, that from the rented flats above us people came to our office with different kind of problems.
So for example with understanding a letter from the Child Welfare Agency, or with any dept.
that what should they do, where should they go.
Among them there are a lot of our old inhabitants, who lived here before, and they in any case come in if they have some problems, or they search for us.
This is a good feeling. I have a feeling that it was worth it, because they remember of something what I did or I said to him before in that time.
Actually it makes me angry that humanity extinct from the world and it is not true, that we can not add a little something to another peoples life.
There are a lot of people, who are coming back. Came around, look in, come in, knock on our door, they say "We had one more kid, than two more."
They're not coming in only when they are in trouble, but even if they are not, if they only want to see us and talk a bit.
If we meet on the streets, they shout from the other side, they recognize me and we greet each other and this is a good feeling as well.
I have graduated from ELTE University before the bologna system.
Since then I work here in the "Pince" Youth Office, which is not a youth office anymore, but a youth club.
Almost 100% of our visitors are young roma people.
These young adults are avoided in the bus stop, people are not sitting next to them on the bus, the security guard is following them in the shop, and they are usually dropped out of school.
But in our place they experience, that we consider them competent in many things.
The hobby or one of the things I bring into my work is my dog, he is called "Clay" (Gyurma).
At the very beginning the reason why I brought him in was that when he was here, the atmosphere was relaxed.
So only because a dog was here, everyone behaved more calmer.
You can do anything with him, he will not react aggressively.
Those young kids, in whom nobody trust outside and the people evade them and so on.
I will give them my dog, so they can take him for a walk.
So truthfully I think, that trust and love, so that we trust them and we think that they are capable of things that a lot of other people don't,
and that we are turning towards them with absolute love and because of this they are here, and they trust us and they love us as well.
