Agroforestry
Population explosion at an uncontrolled rate burdened with climate change is resulting in reduced forest cover directly impacting us and our environment
We can mitigate the adverse effects and bring the balance between human and environment interactions through agro-forestry
Agro-forestry, is the process of growing trees and shrubs along with farming on the farm land
Agro-forestry provides farmers with food, income, medicinal properties, firewood, feed for livestock and above all helps to maintain an balance with the environment
Planting trees can serve as firewood which helps is using the cowdung for nourishing the farm fields which otherwise goes into use for cooking purposes
Trees grown as hedges on the farmland helps the crops to withstand strong winds and the fruit bearing trees are saved from stray animals
Trees not only helps farmers with income, food, fuel and feed for animals it also reduces the dependency of farmers on forests and saves from human exploitation resulting in less environmental threats
Agro-forestry helps farmers in good yields, more incomes and sustainable lifestyles
Farmer's Interview: Om Prakash Shukul
I have planted mango trees in low lying areas of my field
I take two crops in this field. I earn from the crop yields as well as the selling the mangoes. Atleast next five years I hope to earn from the fruit yields
Encouraged by the results I also planted Gauva in two and half acres and do incrop farming in the rest of the land
I plan also to take up other crops in 10years to come like turmeric which requires shade to grow
Whatever I learn from awareness meetings, I have tried to implement and I am happy with the results
