In many parts of the world, malaria has been defeated.
Yet in many other places, it remains all too common, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
But malaria can be prevented and cured, and Novartis is working to help.
We recently reached two important milestones.
First, more than 500 million doses of our anti-malarial treatment have been distributed, without profit to Novartis, since 2001.
That's when we started our effort along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and others.
500 million. That’s nearly equal to everyone who lives in the European Union.
Yet, it’s amazing to think that malaria kills a child every sixty seconds in Africa.
And until recently, there was no child-friendly treatment for kids who need it.
So, a few years ago, we introduced a special new formulation for children suffering from malaria.
It tastes sweet, so it’s easier for kids to take.
Today, in just three years, we have delivered more than 100 million treatments for children in 39 countries hardest hit by malaria.
That's one-fifth of the total, and it's a real investment in the future.
The reason for all this is simple: no one should die from malaria today.
And that’s why Novartis is working to help eliminate malaria.
