GE Life Sciences connects Biological Research to Clinical Therapy in two ways. No other company does
this -- and it gives us a unique insight into the journey a cell makes from Biology
to Therapy. It's an exciting journey. And a relatively
new, untrodden path. For comparison. consider the IT world 30 years ago. In three decades
computers have shrunk dramatically in size while expanding their capabilities by a magnitude
we could never have imagined. The world wide web and technology applications have transformed
every aspect of our lives. Biology today is at the beginning of its own
transformational journey. Fast forward 30 years and our lives will be significantly
changed -- in ways we can't even see yet - by the things we will learn from interpreting
the vast amounts of biological data we will amass.
The knowledge gained will be used to develop clinical therapies that are increasingly targeted
to the individual and more effective as a result.
Our business is about helping customers along this journey from Biology to Therapy.
We approach the journey in two ways. In Route 1 we build tools used in cell and protein
manipulation - identifying cells and proteins, understanding how they work and coaxing them
into producing substances that can be used therapeutically.
Our Research and Applied Markets tools enable scientists to study cells and proteins in
a variety of applications -- from understanding the basis of disease to guiding drug development.
In Bioprocess, we support customers who are manufacturing biopharmaceuticals - drugs based
on biological life forms. Our tools are vital, used in the manufacture of insulin and many
other drugs that treat diseases like cancer, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
Route 2 of the journey from Biology to Therapy involves looking at the biology - rather than
manipulating it. This is all about diagnosis -- using our understanding of how cells work.
Our Core Imaging business develops diagnostic products used in X-ray, CT, MRI, SPECT or
PET scans to help doctors get a better picture when managing diseases like cancer, heart
disease or Parkinson's.
Clarient, our diagnostic lab business, evaluates patient biopsy samples, directly helping clinicians
diagnose cancer and other conditions.
Our goal is to help doctors make more informed diagnoses, in the belief that better informed
diagnosis leads to better patient outcomes.
So Life Sciences is our growth business. Imagine the possibilities. As we progress, the vast
amounts of knowledge and data we help our customers gain will guide them ever more quickly
from better biological understanding to better clinical therapy.
We are in the business of accelerating the journey from Biology to Therapy.
