Hi! Welcome to the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen
This portrait was executed by Balthasar Denner
You have his signature here
"Balthasar Denner 1718"
He was born in Altona, near Hamburg
then part of Denmark, now in Germany
Denner goes to
Berlin
and becomes member of the Academie der Künste in 1707
and later he goes to London
there he has a great success with a portrait
of an old lady - it is an astonishing realistic portrait.
and it was sent to Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor
who buys it for a great sum of money (the presenter Kalle Lundahl waves his wallet)
so he becomes rich
Denner goes to various courts in Europe
and he becomes the friend of
Georg Friedrich Händel and also Johann Sebastian Bach
and he made a portrait of Bach family. Denner loved music.
Here you have a portrait
also executed by B. Denner
showing the Countess Hennicke
She was a friend of Bach
Both portraits are
almost early Rococo (Rococo artists - beginning around 1715 with the beginning of the reign of Louis XV - opted for a more jocular, florid and graceful approach to Baroque art and architecture.)
with these red cheeks and this graceful and florid white cap. Speaking about the white cap:
We could end this presentation with
me imitating the man with the white cap. Thanks.
