Hi and welcome to the OSi Map Viewer. This video tutorial will enable you to interrogate a large databaser of maps
and aerial ortho photos free of charge and is also the first step in purchasing large scale maps online.
Click on the "Explore Maps" here or on the green bar on the home page here.
You are now in the map viewer interface and by default the zoom tool is active.
To get a closer look at your area of interest, either click multiple times over the area or draw a selection marquee like this.
Located in this area also are the zoom out and pan tools.
Alternatively, you can click on "Search" in the menu here and the search box will pop up.
I have entered "Ordnance Survey Ireland" into the search box, but this will work for domestic home address' also.
A number of possible resolves to your search will appear in the lower part of the box.
Click on the correct one and it will be displayed at a scale of 1:5000. Again you can select the zoom tool to get a closer look.
Again, you can select the zoom tool to get a closer view.
You can also search by county, co-ordinates and historic maps from the menu at the top of the search pop up window.
You can use the slider on the left to zoom back out to an all Ireland view, or alternatively, click on reset view here.
Now let's take a look at the various map views available. In the "Preview Map Series" menu, you can select "Street Map"
which will give you a large scale view of 1:2000 where it is possible to discern individual houses.
Then there are 3 sets of ortho photos from the years 2005, 2000 and 1995. Next you can select "Wind Report" followed by two historic
6 inches, the latter in black and white and finally the historic 25 inch map series.
Click on any of the ortho or historic views and move the overlay slider to the right.
This will give you a modern map view coming through the now transparent top layer.
This view shows the ortho 2005 view, superimposed on an up to date map at 50%.
When viewing one of the historical maps, it is possible to interrogate the data further by clicking in historic layers here.
A dialogue box will appear, allowing you to select various environmental and geneological features and toggle them on and off.
And that's how you use the Ordnance Survey Ireland map viewer.
You can always return to the OSi home page by clicking here or the OSi shop by clicking here.
And of course your shopping cart and orders are always available to view here.
The status box located at the lower left corner will always display the scale of your present
view together with the X Y position of your cursor.
