In the city of Mechelen, you no longer need to visit the city hall to get official documents.
All documents can be downloaded online thanks to a hybrid signature.
The hybrid signature can be a 2D barcode that is printed on the digitally signed document.
After printing, this visual stamp can be used to verfify authenticity of the document.
Automatic verification can be done with a flatbed scanner. (but also with a keyboard for example)
Inventor of the new solution Guy Dehond, details a use case:
Guy Dehond: "People often used their cities e-portals to request certificates and documents.
They would download a digitally signed document and then print that on their home computer.
Problem here is that a digitally signed document loses its authenticity when printed.
A hybrid signature, however, guarantees authenticity of that document, even when printed.
because the recipient of that document can verify the content of that document."
