Another beautiful morning in Darby. But when the students lined up this morning they had
company. Governor Steve Bullock and his wife Lisa hosting Bridges to recognize the first
ever "School Breakfast Champion Award"...
GOV. STEVE BULLOCK/D-MT "We know when they get a good breakfast they're
going to be much more attentive in school."
BILLY SHORE/ SHARE OUR STRENGTH "Math scores are 17-percent higher. Attendance
rates are a couple days longer. That correlates to reading on grade level."
JEFF BRIDGES/ACTOR-SHARE OUR STRENGTH SPOKESMAN "Last year only 30-percent of the kids were
participating in the "breakfast after the bell" program. Now it's 76-percent. My gosh,
what a great example for the rest of the country."
Bridges and the governor tucked into breakfast with their new friends, along with some doodling...
NAT SOUND "I'll pass it to you okay? You ever play that
game? I'm just going to draw this."
BRIDGES "When you're hungry it's hard to get your
creative ideas going. If you're fed, especially in the morning then you're ready to learn.
You're ready to create. And I know the, what did they call it, what kind of breakfast was
it? The "Mountain Main Breakfast". I know that made me draw a better penguin."
That penguin, "Big Z" from "Surf's Up" was just one of dozens of roles Bridges has played
since birth, and the one that impressed the kids the most.
DB STANDUP One thing that impressed both Bridges and
the governor was the amount of homemade preparation that goes into the food that's served here
in the Darby schools."
NAT SOUND "This is pretty cool, a school to make their
own salsa, and their own breakfast like this."
BRIDGES "The school here is doing it in such a creative
way. A lot of schools still get the pre made breakfasts and stuff. But here, there's a
wonderful lady I just met, Thong, who is here cooking all these breakfasts that are so delicious."
BULLOCK "When every child has the opportunity to have
a little bit of breakfast as they're preparing for the day, it's minimal intrusion on the
actual classroom. And it sets all the kids off on the right foot."
The moral of today's story? The Dude abides in Darby and he's well fed!
NAT SOUND "Breakfast!"
