Hello, I'm Wendy Spencer, the CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and I'm here to talk to you about a summer initiative called Let's Read, Let's Move.
Let's Read, Let's Move is an effort to promote summer reading and also an awareness of childhood obesity.
It was inspired by the Presidents call to serve and the First Lady's Let's Move initiative.
During the summer kids lose some of the educational gains they've made during the school year.
and by the time they return to school they're further behind.
Reading even five books while school is out can prevent the summer slide.
Kids health can also decline during the summer if they don't have access to healthy foods and aren't getting enough exercise.
So this summer, Let's Read, Let's Move is taking on these issues in three ways:
Encouraging physical activity.
Increasing access to nutritional summer meals.
And putting books in the hands of kids that need them.
To learn more about these and other ways to get involved, visit SERVE.gov
and let's keep kids reading and moving all summer long.
