In France, french toast is eaten for dessert.
But in America, french toast makes for a sweet, and satisfying breakfast.
French toast is best made with thick, sliced bread.
Like brioche, halla, or french bread. Just choose your favorite.
First, in a medium bowl, you'll need to beat eggs,
milk, sugar, vanilla and salt with a wire whisk,
or hand ***, until combined. Then pour your mixture into a shallow bowl.
Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat.
To test a griddle temperature, sprinkle a few drops of water.
If bubbles jump around, the heat is just right.
You might have to grease the griddle with butter, if necessary.
Immerse each slice of bread into the egg mixture.
You want the bread to soak up the custardy goodness,
but without falling apart.
Make sure you place the slices on and griddle gently.
Cook each side for about 4 minutes,
or until you see that it's golden brown.
Serve with a pad of butter, and drizzle with maple syrup.
