>> [Background Music] What Garrett has is called Tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve.
And what that is is one is a hole between the lower chambers of the heart
or the ventricles, the main pumps of the heart.
The second part of having Tetralogy is varying degrees
of obstruction from the heart or to the lungs.
And in some ways the heart defect is relatively straightforward to fix, but it's the lung issues
and the airway issues that are the bigger problem.
And that's why Garrett is here today to have those addressed.

>> When he was born, he was so sensitive to everything.
Like when the nurses would just move his head from side to side
because of his compromised airways he would just turn blue like instantly.
I will never forget seeing him for the first time like that.
That was hard.
>> And I read an article about this procedure that was done
where they made an airway splint by using a 3D printer.
And it mentioned Dr. Green's name.
And so I read it, and I thought that was really neat, you know,
I think this is really something we should look into.
We should contact him and see, you know, see if they are interested in Garrett.
>> And so we thought, you know, this could be Garrett's chance.
And even though it scares me half to death to send him in for another, you know,
major surgery, I think I just, we're very, we're just remaining very hopeful.
>> There we go.
>> Oh, that's way better.
>> Yeah. That's nice.
>> Yeah. Yep.
Yep. There it goes.
>> [Inaudible] gotten a lot better for Garrett.
>> Beautiful.
>> Nice. There it goes.
There we go.
Up and down.

>> OK. That's it.
Oh, this is absolutely fabulous.
We know that the splint is working.
He is able to ventilate both lungs for the first time.
I'm very optimistic for him.
[ Background Discussion ]
>> I think he needed this surgery.
>> He's now on a home ventilator.
He looks the most comfortable and happy.
>> Yeah.
>> Like we've been starting to get smiles out of him and.
>> Yeah. We haven't seen smiles for a while.
So getting smiles is very exciting.
>> We just never imagined that Garrett would even be able to come off of a ventilator.
But now with these splints, you know,
we think that he'll come off the ventilator within a matter of months.
>> Right now I really do feel like seeing him do so well since surgery.
He's actually started to give both of us hope that we'll be able to get him home.
