I'm John Alfano, president and CEO of AOPHA [Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes,
Housing and Services for the Aging]. We are a trade association for not-for-profit providers
of senior services in Columbus, Ohio. The first thing that I tell an incoming chair
is, "Come with me to the ASAE Chief Elected/Chief Staff Officer training." It's a great way
in which to get to know each other better and to realize the expectations of becoming
a chair, what your responsibilites and roles are, and that of the board. So we start off
with that. And then I talk to them about transitioning from being a board member where they can freely
participate to being the chair where they facilitate discussion and trying to pull bits
of discussion from different board members to gain consensus and better understanding.
So those are my top two things that I share with a board chair as they start their new
job.
