Hi guys and welcome to another LifeSIGNS video.
Today we are gonna talk about WHO self injures. There is a really big stereotype surrounding self injury I think,
I think that a lot people think it's emo. REALLY don't wanna use that word, but a lot of people say emo.
And I had an emo stage when I was young, eyeliners still quite heavy, yep.
Better than it was. People also think that self injury is a young people's thing. Only teenagers do it and then you grow out of it when you know better.
A lot of people say self injury is just females and that guys are too tough to struggle with something that is so bad.
I'm here to tell you that this is a load of rubbish essentially, I wanna highlight to you that here at LifeSIGNS we wanna tell you
that there is not a certain type of person that self injures. Self injury is not necessarily a negative on the person, it is nothing against the person as themselves.
Self injury is a coping mechanism, it's a way that a person is choosing to deal with a certain level of emotional distress in their lives,
and simply self injury is an outlet for them to gain a bit of control or, deal with their emotional distress in some way.
Anyone can self injure, whether your female, whether your middle aged, whether your male, whether your a teenager, anything.
Anyone can self injure. It is not something where you need to fit a certain demographic, anyone can self injure and that is open to anyone.
Literally anyone. I really want to highlight this, that people need to stop looking at self injury as a type of person that are....people need to stop looking at self injury as its an infliction,
and that there is a certain "type" of person who is like that.
It doesn't mean you are any less of a person if you are using self injury, and people who are using self injury I think they deserve people to stop
looking at them with such negativity, it's just a coping mechanism and it something that you can get out of and you can learn other ways to deal with yourself.
I think instead of looking in terms of gender or ethnicity or age, I think we need to look in terms of similarities such as poor confidence, or perfectionism or low body image, high achievement.
Cause these are all factors that often come under people that do actually self injur.
A lot of the time people who self injure are perfectionists which is why the stress gets to them about things and it builds up and builds up
Poor body image, stuff like that. A lot of the time, not all, but a lot of people who suffer from self injury do suffer from these things.
So I think instead of looking in terms of broad demographics of gender, ethnicity and age, I think we need to look in terms of things people could actually work on,
like perfectionism or high achievement, bringing it down, the level of perfectionism.
I think it's these things that people need to look out for.
Self injury can also stem from a trauma you suffered or from a history of abuse, obviously this is devastating to the party and those around them.
It's not something that you can get over easily, however here at LifeSIGNS, whatever your reasons for turning to self injury,
we are never gonna tell you to stop, we are never gonna judge you, for your self injury.
However, we will give you some guidance and suggest some more healthy ways of dealing with stress and dealing with emotion.
That can basically lead to a healthier life for you. We are never gonna make or force you to stop and we are never gonna judge you for doing it in the first place.
However, on our website, links down here, we have got a lot of help out there that can tell you different ways of delaying the urge and maybe stopping.
