What's up, guys? Preston here with another episode of Grappler Going Abroad. What I'm
talking about today, is weight management and hydration in relation to cutting weight
and maintaining weight for combat sports. As you guys have probably heard, I'm very
concerned about weight management and doing it the right way. I did a whole lot of poor
weight management when I was in high school for wrestling. I'm sure that's the case with
a lot of former high school and college wrestlers. We've done some pretty stupid stuff in regards
to our weight management for wrestling. So now that I've been moved into the Judo realm,
it's become really important to me to cut and manage my weight properly. Back in about
2014, I started losing a lot of weight. So I went from about 280 lbs, 275 lbs, down to
about, up until about a week ago, about 192 lbs. I lost pretty damn close to 100 lbs over
the course of about a year and a half. Now I did that by following a simple method. I
made sure my caloric intake was at least 500 calories under what my daily suggested should
be and making sure that my carbs were under 20 grams. So I went the low carb direction
with my weight managment. A lot of people will say that's not the right way to do it,
but at this point any kind of weight loss is completely subjective. You can do it in
a multitude of different ways, it really just depends on how your body reacts to whatever
you're doing. So for me, the low carb and calorie counting really did the trick. I really
lost a lot of weight. When I lost the first 40 lbs. That's when I really started getting
heavy into training in Judo and Karate again, so that jumped how many calories I was burning
by a lot. So that's when the weight really started coming off, after I started training
again. The way I lost that weight was I was putting in less calories and less carbs than
I was burning. I was burning my fat reserves as a means of energy for the activities I
was doing. Now recently, I've gained back about 10 lbs. So I'm about 200 lbs flat, right
now. My weight class in Judo is 90 kg, which is 198 lbs, so it's really not that big of
a deal having to cut like 2 lbs. It's all water weight. I guarantee you after practice
tonight I will be under 198. In regards to weight management, if you can do the calorie
counting and do the carb counting, maybea few weeks leading up to competition or a fight,
then generally that will help you out a lot. You're able to keep your fluids at a relatively
normal intake, without really sacrificing your hydration and ultimately your health.
Really that's what it's about, healthy weight management. I've found in my previous competitions,
whenever I've implemented these weight loss techniques, it's really worked. I've gone
into competitions well rested, well hydrated, made weight and then fought to the best of
my abilities. I've been very poor about my weight management and my diet recently. Between
work, me having to wake up real early, it's been really hard for me to maintain my weight.
You know, studies have shown that losing sleep also negatively affects your metabolism. You
also want to make sure that you're maintaining your metabolic weight. If you put too much
diet soda, too much junk food, you're going to slow down your metabolism. So you need
to be making sure you're eating a lot of veggies that boost metabolism. Caffeine also boosts
metabolism. When I initially lost weight, I cut out all processed sugars, simple sugars.
So that really helped me maintain my weight. But that's all I got for you guys today. Hopefully
this video on weight management and weight cutting for combat sports and martial arts
comes in handy. Especially if you got a big fight coming up. I know that's really important.
