Data is no longer just data. Data is sort of the flat files of information and the knowledge
is putting those together into something that can create something meaningful. Drug knowledge
is how that drug is used. I think the concept of moving from drug data to drug knowledge
or med knowledge is really a critical concept in healthcare today. Data paints one side
of the picture but being able to take that data and put it in a knowledge base environment
so that you can clearly communicate to your other pharmacists, to your colleagues, but
also to your patients is important. One of First Databank’s new products that I am
particularly excited about allows clinicians to customize the alerting that comes off of
that med knowledge and make it really highly relevant to their clinical practice. Instead
of generating hundreds of alerts, the alerts can be specific to the patient context and
the care context. If I were a prescribing physician and I was convinced that an alert
was an important alert and I had the ability to filter on that, I think that would be a
key capability because I now have an ability to have some control and some way to interface
back with the system. One of my favorite products of First Databank allowed the clinician to
think about orders and medications the way ordering point of care clinicians do. This
domain has historically been about pharmacy and pharmaceuticals, this product of First
Databank raises that data from pharmaceutical industry to clinicians point of care. I can’t
rely on a vendor that is not going to look for innovation to make the process smoother
for us as a company and I believe that FDB is aligned with that.
