This week's Music Monday is the MAEGYO edition
With Jay Park's "Star"
[music]
It's the first video of 2012 and it's a ballad!
I…love R&B ballads.
So, I love the location for this music video.
I'm getting a little bit bored with locations that look like extremely obvious sets.
Big *** took us to Vegas, Batoost took us on an outdoor walk, 2PM took us to a club
and JYJ took us to the most deadly intersection in all of Korea
The point that we're getting at is in those just mentioned videos,
it's nice to see a video taking place in what feels like a real, solid location.
High ceilings, wide hallways, a gorgeous view and billowy white curtains: that place looks amazing.
Umm, can I crash at your place tonight? SLUMBER PARTY!
Awesome! Let's watch horror movies and put curlers in my hair.
Well, I would have agreed with you Martina,
if it wasn't for that freaking bare-bricked room with the freaking huge metal gridded windows
that we saw in Teen Top, and U-Kiss, and *** Yong Guk's "I Remember"
Not that I'm bitter or anything. I just never want to see that room again.
Oont! It's already a good start to the year! Brohoho! Brohoho! Brohoho!
Now, this is just a small complaint,
and maybe it's because we edit videos every single freaking day
but I was really distracted by all the extra editing that was added to this video
The lens flares, the Michael Jackson esque flash bulbs. The random blurred top frame
It just seemed kind of unnecessary.
Gosh! I'm parched from all this talking
Here Martina! Have this fresh, clean water from Jeju Island!
Wow! That is refreshing!
Now, maybe this is just us, but something just feels a little bit off about Jay Park's image in this video.
When we think about Jay Park, we think about a confident, swag, b-boy style dancer
something like what they captured in the Abandoned music video.
Except for that one part of the video where he cries to the girl with big ***.
That was a little bit awkward.
When we watched this video, there seemed to be a clash between his
I'm the confident Jay Park, dancing with my baseball cap and my crew!
and
I'm a docile puppy Jay Park in a tight turtleneck and black jeans, making googly eyes at you.
Now we're not saying that people who pull off a hip hop image can't be docile and sweet
It just seemed weird to us that both of those images appeared in this video.
I was actually a little bit jarred to see Jay Park smiling so much
and coyly singing to the camera and lying on the couch and rubbing his eyes like a baby
and drinking his latte and staring off sadly with furrowed eyebrows.
He's supposed to be coy and shy and submissive but I don't believe it. I think he's acting.
When he's all hip hop and confident. That's the Jay Park I'm comfortable with.
This though, just really seems like he's acting. I don't know. Maybe it's just me?
Now, it's not that he's being cutie boy aegyo,
because when I think of cutie boy aegyo I think of BILASA in Beautiful Target or TVXQ in Balloons.
Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
You would never catch me dancing in animal costumes.
Jay Park here, though, isn't cutie boyish aegyo.
It's like a manly kind of aegyo, that doesn't really match with his other image.
It's…it's uh…MAEGYO!
I love you my little hamster!
I love you my star!
I'm going to run to the washroom ok?
Ok! Come back quickly so we can watch The Notebook.
Just be warned: you know I'm gonna cry again.
I know you're sensitive to that movie.
I am! I love you so much!
PPPPFFFFFTTT. Oh yeah I've been holding that in all day.
Oh yeah I've been waiting for you too!
Ohh! MMM! Oh good.
Oh where my dogs at? Let me see what they're doing. Let me see what they're doing.
AYO WHUDDUP! WE HITTIN THE CLUB TOMORROW RIGHT?
Oh no no no I can't come tonight. I'm staying home with the woman you know what I'm saying?
UHH UHHH UHH. Uuuhuuuh! *cough cough*
You okay honey?
I think I got the sniffles when you were gone because I don't have enough snuggles!
Ok snuggle me!
On a side note, I know this whole Secret Garden foam on the lips kiss scene was all the rage last year
But how…how did he get foam both on his top AND his bottom lip?
It's impossible to get foam on your bottom lip, because the bottom lip is on the outside of the mug
Did he stick his whole face in the coffee mug?
I don't know. First we have one lip covered in foam and now two lips. What's next?
[Romantic love music]
You're disgusting. I think it's time we start seeing other people.
[music]
Considering this was such a slow-paced ballad,
I was actually surprised that Jay Park managed to get any dancing in here at all.
I think that's why I was disappointed to find that this song was another ballad,
because I'm really excited to see Jay Park dance.
I guess I'm just more interested in seeing videos of Jay Park show off his dance skills rather than his acting skills.
Although I suppose I really shouldn't complain, because the more dancing he has in his music videos
the more ridiculous we look trying to explain them to you.
When Jay Park does the dance for this chorus he looks so smooth and cool,
but when Simon and I do it, we just look like angry chickens trying to attack each other
*accurate chicken sounds*
Chickens don't clap!
[music]
As for the English of the song, we give this a
5 out of 5
Now, we know Jay Park is a fluent English speaker,
so his grammar and pronunciation is a 5 out of 5
and always will be 5 out of 5, or always SHOULD be 5 out of 5
but we found one part of the song really awkward.
They know I'm Jay Park! They also know you! So what? I love you!
Now, supposedly this was inspired by se7en and his long time girlfriend,
but I'm not really sure how that helps me understand this song
and, really, I don't want to have to Google a song to help me understand it.
And…when you name drop yourself in a song, shouldn't it be done with a little more confidence?
It should be done more bragging, like "YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS! I'M JAY PARK! MADE IN ASIA!"
But this…just sounds a little bit awkward to me.

For last year's Music Monday, we asked you which Mega Clock dance you preferred.
IU in You and I, or U-Kiss in Tick Tack
And the winner was, U-Kiss, by a lot.
It looks like we had a huge flock of fangirls come to the site and vote for them so, congratulations U-Kiss.
For this week's Maegyo edition, we ask you who pulls off the better Maegyo,
Jay Park in Star, or G Dragon in Breathe.
Leave your votes in the comments, or in our Facebook poll, and we'll announce the winners next week.
