You know it is interesting to me that as we are aging more and more baby boomers are becoming
disabled. I would really like to use this to raise their consciousness more about the
disability right’s movement and independent living and what we have accomplished. I have
written about this we have already radically changed what it is to get older. Radically
changed the experience of getting older. Older people have far many more choices. But I also
believe that the baby boom generation there are enough people that know a little bit at
least about the disability rights movement. Their expectations about what is going to
mean to age and how functional limitations are very different from the generation that
came before. Our parent’s generation was so disability phobic and there are a lot of
historical reasons. You think about what they lived through and than they go us. They didn’t
deserve it at al but they did, but here we are and we are becoming them but we are not.
I
think it is a big opportunity to learn how to promote the independent living perspective
and the perspective about disability that will really help people age differently.
