A key part of the transformation strategy has been providing employment – particularly,
employment and training for the younger people who live in the camps.
we spoke to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and we asked if a lot of our young mens can
get full time jobs to build the houses that they was going to live in. So all around all
the town camps we've got young aboriginal people working.
lot of indigenous tradies starting to come through and it's good for a lot of indigenous
people to work on town camps and it's good for people who look at that; they feel really
good about seeing indigenous people work on their houses.
Alice is my home town eh pretty much related to a lot of people who live in the town camps,
being part of a crew that has a contract to be able to build for the town camps is yeah
feels awesome.
We're doing mainly refurb, rebuilding all them houses. So, we're doing stainless kitchens,
wardrobes and just repairs.
For a week during the month they go in a classroom and get down and do their paper work and stuff
like that so there's a lot involved for them.
They've got employment; they're helping their own communities. A lot of them young people
they was born there, grew up there so it gives them a bit of pride to themselves that they
can say "We built that house".
they come to work with a smile on their faces every day, which is good; brings a good vibe
for the day, good working day; it's good.
They can see why the changes are for the better and once again, like I say, it's for those
little ones you see roaming around here. In 20 or 30 years time they are the future leaders.
