The Legion is proud to support the Armed Forces Memorial which forms part of the site at the National Memorial Arboretum
in Staffordshire. The Armed Forces Memorial was successful in being voted top heritage site in the National Lottery awards earlier in the year.
Each year, sadly, a number of our Armed Forces personnel die in service those names are added to the walls of the Armed Forces Memorial.
For the service men and women who have died in the violence of war. Each one remembered by and known to God.
May God give peace.
God give peace.
The Armed Forces Memorial is also the focus for Remembrance outside of London was again is the location for
two Remembrance services of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, the 11th November.
In London the focus for Remembrance was once again the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday
and, of course, the march past at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
My name’s Ben Shephard, I personally like to make a very warm welcome, if bracing welcome, to Trafalgar Square
this morning to the 90th anniversary Silence in the Square which has been organised by The Royal British Legion.
This year marked the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day and The Royal British Legion sponsored a major event,
Silence in the Square, at Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square was packed for the silence
and we were supported by Hayley Westenra, Blake, the Fron Male Voice Choir, Rolf Harris and John Hurt.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die.
Thank you.
Looking forward to 2009 I can confidently predict that it is going to be another very busy year.
The Legion faces many challenges, there is no doubt that we can’t stand still because the world will pass us by.
We need to continue to respond to the demands of our beneficiaries and the needs of our beneficiaries
and that means we've got to be even more successful in our fundraising activities.
The Legion is often perceived as an organisation that only supports older veterans, of course we know that’s not the case.
We’re also there to serve the existing service community.
So let us remember in 2009 the phrase that we used to launch the 2008 Poppy Appeal:
Serving those who serve.
Thank you for your help in 2008 and I look forward to meeting many of you in 2009. Have a good year.
