Can you introduce yourself and the band for our readers ?
Hi,
I'm Josh from You Me At Six and, yeah.
Does You Me At Six's meaning is a date after school at 6 P.M ?
Yeah, it's kinda like that.
It's kind of we were making our finals arrangements.
So it's just kind of You Me At Six.
An abbreviation for our arrangements, yeah.
You started your career quite young. Was it difficult to convince your parents to let you go away from school to go on tour ?
Yeah it was actually, my mom and dad didn't want me to
be in a band.
I remember, there was this time when I wanted to go and play a festival at Leeds with YMA6.
And my parents were like "No, it's not happening, you're not doing it"
and I said "Look, if you don't let me go and play this show, I'm leaving home"
I had an exam the next day so the deal was that I had to work solely the whole week for this exam.
I wasn't allowed to speak with my friends on the phone or anything.
That one day I went and played the show and I had the exam the next day.
I got a B so it's not too bad !
On your second record “Holding Down”, It seems that you have decided to be go for a more aggressive direction?
I suppose some songs are a bit more rocky.
I think the rockier songs are rockier
and the poppier songs are poppier,
if that makes sense.
Was it to set yourself aside with the rest of the pop-punk scene?
Yeah, I think we wanted to stand out a little bit more.
I think there's a lot of bands out there doing what we do,
you know playing pop-punk, rock and that kind of stuff.
But I don't think there's any bands out there, right now,
who sounds exactly like we do.
There's definitely a different sound to our band,
it's not drastically different but it's still a little bit different
I have already seen you twice in support of Fall Out Boy and Paramore. How did you live those moments and have these bands been influences on your songwriting?
I definitely would say that a band like Paramore definitely influenced us as a band,
in terms of what they've achieved and how they kind of handled themselves.
We have a lot of respect for them.
Playing with Paramore and the show with FOB in Paris were great experiences.
It gave us a chance to really start building a fanbase in France so it was great.
I’m very very grateful. And I hope one day we can play the kind of venues they can, it'd be nice.
You Me At Six's artworks are a bit similar, with an almost empty background and colorful drawing in the front. Is it inspired by tattoo artists?
It's not inspired by any tattoo artists, although we are definitely all into it, in the band.
People in the band got tattoos. (Drummer) there.
She's my favorite, she's my gf. My gf's on his arm !
But you know, none of us is particularly good at art so we don't actively get involved in the artwork.
But we knew we wanted strong colors, simple.
You did a lot of festival this summer. How is it to play on the Warped Tour, and to play in front of 30 thousand people at the Reading Festival ?
It was great man ! The Warped Tour was really fun,
we made a lot of friends.
(sorry I have something in my nose).
And Reading & Leeds was just ... ridiculous.
It was the most insane thing ever !
I was watching some videos on Youtube earlier on today and I still find it hard to believe that we did that.
Have you met some new bands that you like on those festivals ?
Yeah definitely, we’ve become friends with Parkway Drive from Australia.
They're really good dudes.
They’re positive, chill guys, we just hang out with them especially.
We got to spend our summer with friends in Set Your Goals and Mayday Parade.
So yeah, Warped Tour was great.
You are on the new BMTH record. Jona, the guitarist told us that you did this featuring because you are friend.
We've been friends with BMTH for like 4 or 5 years.
Tom, Oli’s younger brother, that was the 1st guy I met from up Northern England.
We were watching Wresltemania, we got super drunk and I met him and ever since then,
whenever we go up North, all the guys from Drop Dead,
they're like our family : Ian, Carol, Brendan, all the lads.
Whenever there’s a show they are there.
With Drop Dead they were on this summer’s Warped Tour.
The boys in BMTH are good friends, when the chance came around for me to be part of what they’re doing,
I thought it would be a great way for both our bands to be involved our project.
I also really wanted to do it.
Is it possible to see a featuring of Oli screaming on your next record. Have you already thought of some guests that you would like to have on your record?
We wanted him to be on "Hold Me Down" so
we'll definitely try to get him on the next one.
We'll probably gonna get some friends. We never really had many people sing on our songs.
On Hold Me Down, we had Aled from Kids In the Glass House.
We'd like to probably get, maybe Winston from Parkway, Oli from BMTH
on the heavier songs.
We've got a song at the moment, that we've just finished writing that needs a female voice,
we might ask my little sister again to do it or who knows…
Or someone from Paramore ?
Maybe Hayley,
but if it was that easy, we would do it all the time
but it's complicated to get people in the same place
but if it works and Hayley would want to do it,
then sure, something could come out.
Have you already talked about a new direction, and a producer for this new album ?
Yeah, we've definitely started writing,
we've got about 4 songs so far
and I'm really excited because I feel like we're going in a new direction,
in the sense that our rockiest songs like "The Consequence" and "Trophy Eyes"
are even rockier and even heavier.
and pop songs like "Underdog" and "Liquid Confidence" are more poppy
so it's kinda like, we're trying to step up every time
we wrote new music from what we've already achieved
and beat that so I hope you guys will like it.
Do you play in other bands, or have any side project ?
There's some songs I've been writing by myself
It's just me and an acoustic guitar
so I don't know if it's really suited for YMA6.
Maybe if we get time our priorities are YMA6,
that’s our main project.
To be honest I'm really happy right now.
Maybe an acoustic solo album for you ?
Maybe,
I’ll just put some songs online. I have recorded some songs myself.
but it’s nothing really too serious.
Are you inspired by other kind of arts than music ?
Well Matt is really into drawing.
I'm a pretty basic dude,
I like being in a band,
trying some sports,
and beer.
But Dan and Max are really into drawing.
I’d like to it, I come up with stuff of my own, but I’m not very good at drawing.
What are your favorite albums for 2010 ?
My favourite album would be “Deep Blue” by Parkway Drive,
and the new Bring Me The Horizon is wicked, so I can’t wait for it to come out.
Can you sing something in French for us ?
Allouette … I don't know what it is…
Some words in French ?
Je m'appelle Josh, j'habite le sud-est de l'Angleterre
avec ma mère mon père et ma sœur.
Je suis désolé pour mon français qui n'est pas très bon.
