- Japanese Lions have been major supporters of LCIF.
And whether it's addressing disaster relief,
sight, or disability,
Lions are there to help
people in need.
- My son has a disability
and comes to this facility.
When I found out they needed
more space
for vocational training, I went
to my Lions club for help.
- With funds raised by the Club
and a $42,000 U.S. matching grant from LCIF,
they constructed the Taiko Lions Club Care Center
for vocational training and much more.
- We felt the new center could also address
a need for weekend day care.
Families are using the service much more than expected.
- Parents bring their adult children here for activities,
knowing their loved ones are being cared for
by dedicated and trained staff.
- He has a handicap,
so--it's more of a challenge to communicate with other people.
[All singing in Japanese]
- I believe they give him very, very good services here.
He's very happy to come here.
- Lions regularly volunteer at the center
and established a community garden
to help individuals with special needs develop additional skills.
- We're going to the garden today,
and we'll help them harvest
sweet potatoes.
Then we'll go back to the center and teach them
how to cook sweet potato cakes.
- And so together they dig...
harvest...
peel...
chop...
mix...
and steam.
Every small task a big accomplishment.
Seeing physically and intellectually challenged
individuals gain new skills and independence has been
a rewarding experience for the Lions.
- I'm very proud of this project.
Every time I come here, I feel very happy.
I know we are making a difference.
- At a time when funds for social services are limited,
Lions are there for those with disabilities,
providing meaningful activities that enrich lives.
