What these
students are doing is that they are carrying out some very low level chemical analysis
of drugs on currency. Currency as it moves around in society gets contaminated with everything
that you can imagine; ***, methamphetamine, nicotine, caffeine, urea... all types of chemicals.
For something like *** the levels are really low and what this lab is doing is teaching
the students how to carry out very low level analysis. For example, like you might do at
a crime lab for the state police.
If items of real life are contaminated with drugs that can get you arrested and crime
labs do that all the time, day in and day out... get a sample from a car, do an analysis
for ***, and then the person's busted. In this Honors Chemistry laboratory they are
carrying out work that is very advance relatively speaking from the point-of-view of doing trace
level chemical analysis and their doing that and that's why that's the Honors Chemistry
Laboratory.
