Dubbing and subtitling enable us to watch movies,
series, cartoons, and all kind of audiovisual contents,
despite not being recorded in our language.
However, the profession of the audiovisual translator
remains invisible, as well as their work processes.
Researchers at the UJI have x-rayed the map of dubbing
and subtitling to show the used conventions in Spain.
The study revealed that differences between territories
are fewer in subtitling processes
than in dubbing processes.
-Dubbing has more heterogeneous characteristics
and it is also considered as a more artistic activity.
It has the status of artistic activity, while subtitling
has a more technical activity status.
The artistic part is reserved for circles that practice it,
and, therefore, characteristics of the translation for dubbing,
have been more hidden, for more time.
Subtitling is more homogeneous, or rather its applied conventions
are more homogeneous.
Despite differences among different territories,
all translation studies for dubbing
maintain the same priorities in Spain.
-We have seen that it is prioritized to lip-sync the translation
with actors on display.
Thus, the visual effect is natural and the actor
seems to be speaking in Spanish, Catalan, French or Italian
in dubbing languages: this characteristic is essential.
Another characteristic is the great effort
to make the translated utterances sound natural and spontaneous,
and to be a credible dialogue for the audience.
The first x-ray done on audiovisual translation
in the Spanish territory will enable to develop manuals
on labour agreements useful for lecturers
and university students, research groups
and professionals in this sector.
-We believe that authority is multiple, because on the one hand,
we will transfer the results of this study
to professionals of this sector, thus, all they will know
how to do the translation for dubbing and subtitling
in Spain, something that they only know to do in their studio
or in their Autonomous Community.
On the other hand, we will also trasfer it to future translators.
It is an useful analysis to visualize, facilitate and improve the work
of those who enable us to understand voices on display.
