At the marketed Bujumbura Burundi
you can buy just about any food item that you want
or don't want.
But if you want beans or rice, you should visit the stall of Kana Clavier.
He sells a variety of beans along with rice, flour
some small miscellaneous food items, and a few toiletries
like soap and toothbrushes.
Kana is fortunate to have such a successful enterprise,
but he hasn't always had this small store.
Six months ago it would have been an impossible dream
as he begged on the streets of Bujumbura.
Kana doesn't have legs.
At age fifteen he was severely tortured for a month during tribal war.
Both of his legs had to be amputated as a result.
Since then Kana has been forced to beg on the streets to provide for himself.
I Was hungry, a division of Heaven's Family, came to Kana's aid
giving in a five hundred dollar grant started his small shop.
Kana is proud that he has a respectable business by which he can support himself.
On an average day he makes about five dollars in profit.
I Was Hungry has also provided Kana with a hand-propelled tricycle
so that he can travel without the humiliation of scooting on the ground.
His beans and rice businesses has enabled Kana to better support himself
and his family!
His four children are now able to attend school for the first time in their lives,
and they have a better future is sight.
All thanks to gifts to the Handicapped Christians Fund.
