It's a project that took almost 6 years to create
and, well, it's about seeing this whole idea of abandoned shops that are in disuse or in ruin.
Shops or businesses that are 40 and 50 years old…
and from that material, from the terrazos and the original names of the shops
I've created this series of writings that in the end are a kind of new poetry
using the concrete nouns, for example 'queen' or 'volcano' or 'the general'.
Then I create this writing and these new flats, these new terrazos,
it's a common photographic process of sort of scanning a large amount of photos,
from the original material.
Then they are obviously worked with– the typography has been reinvented because it doesn't exist,
in this case we have only 5 letters I've created the rest,
it's like that for almost all of them.
Then for the design on the computer we used a process of 'stitching' in Photoshop.
And after they were printed, they were sewn using a traditional process with a Jacquard Loom,
with machines that make tapestries.
The idea of the magic of the painter which has always existed, you know?
This idea of hyper-realism, you see?
What also fascinated me was that it felt like it was a kind of court in the city,
and it was really important that it had that 3D capacity.
These terrazos and the condition that you find on these terrazos
of cracks, of breakages, of different materials, of bronzes that are incorporated.
So they also give it that 3D capacity.
Also the type of light that we use is very low light, etc.
But it was really important that it had that feeling of absolute reality.
Almost as though it were a piece of reality made here in the gallery.
