>>Had your eyes tested lately?
>>No.
>>What's going on today is the fourth annual Homeless Connect event
and as you can see we've got a lot of folks here already. Our goal was to have
300 persons who are experiencing homelessness here today to be
connected to social and medical services that they may have need of to help them
escape their homelessness. So, we've got 51 providers here. We've got a lot of
volunteers here giving their time to help people find the services they need to be
connected with; and of course the First Presbyterian Church has been so
gracious, both last year and again this year, to host the event for us.
>>It still says we have a job to do
as long as we have folks without homes. They're still part of the Fort Worth family
and we still have a responsibility to give them an opportunity to get a restart.
I think homelessness is being addressed in our city.
It's being addressed in a responsible way though Directions Home.
The more people we can remove from the condition of homelessness,
the fewer people that are going to show up in our emergency rooms
for medical care.
Fewer 9-1-1 calls are going to be made for given emergencies and
it's going to cost the taxpayers less in the long run.
>>It's just a wonderful thing for folks to come together and ... you know these
services are out in the community, but so often
if you don't have transportation it's kinda hard to get from here to there and...
so it's kind of a one-day, one-stop place where they can get connected with
with a variety of services.
So it's a wonderful opportunity for us as a city and as providers
to come together and provide this kind of event for folks.
