My name is Derek Ouyang, Class of 2013. I am a double major in civil engineering and architectural design.
I am the project manager of the Stanford Solar Decathlon Team.
And my name is Emma Sagan. I am in the class of 2014 studying sustainable manufacturing, engineering, and design.
I am the business manager.
The name of the project of our house is Start.Home, and that actually comes from a couple of things.
First of all, Stanford has a startup entrepreneurship culture. We are not shying away from that.
We definitely want to say that we're here to innovate. We're here not to just to win the competition, but to show what the future of home-building should be.
So that's the first meaning of Start.Home.
And then we're also trying to think of it on a human side.
So, whether you're starting a family for the first time or starting a job, or you're just starting new
You know, everyone gets to the point where you need to start new or change something up
And that's why we decided to end up with Start.Home.
We have a running tagline on the side, which is "Sustainability at the push of a button."
And that's really just the whole startup / Silicon Valley mentality to design. What we're starting to design is this idea of a core.
So, if we have all our HVAC, water, or electrical pre-engineered into this module
which can be assembled in a factory and then shipped onto site anywhere in the country.
You can build any custom home you want around that. But then as a homeowner, as a family owner you can guarantee that your house is going to be net zero
and that's because of this core. That's what we're really focusing on designing right now.
So, we're going to design this core, but we're also going to design this beautiful home around it for the actual competition in Irvine.
Were actual pretty close to finalizing our architectural scheme.
And for this summer where're going to have a team devoted to BIM modeling, getting our products, our research, our testing done so that
by October, we are going to have 80% construction documentation finished. It's going to be an exciting summer.
