>> Monteze Gary Freeland Point Park helped me prepare for my career by giving
me a really strong work ethic by demanding a lot from me, which in turn, made me produce better work.
>> Shirley Tannenbaum We try to get the student ready for the transition into the professional world so, once again, we’re
focusing on audition techniques as well as things that have to do with how to handle the business end of show business.
>> Sheila McKenna One of the strengths of this program is that the students study with working professional artists.
>> Morgan Wolk That gives you the unique opportunity to stay connected to the current industry.
You have the opportunity to work with your professors in professional shows.
>> Nick Browne At the City Theatre or Quantum Theatre, and it’s always interesting to actually see them doing the things that they teach.
>> Sheridan Singleton It’s like oh, okay, that makes sense to me now.
You can kind of relate things to things they might say to you in class, to things they’re doing in performance.
>> Ruth Gamble There was a couple mentors that I really connected with that actually were the best part of my experience here.
>> John Amplas So we have these three theaters, given that we have
eighteen live theater productions a year, there’s something going on in one of these theaters or all of these theaters almost constantly.
There’s a professional company associated with it, which is The Rep. And, there’s been several opportunities in my
time here to audition for that equity house, which is great. You get the opportunity to audition for professional directors.
The program is very practical and challenging. It’s also very diverse and the student is offered not only
techniques courses in acting, voice and speech, movement, but has a broad variety of elective credits to choose from.
They introduce you to so many different techniques from Chekov to Alexander to Grotowski to Laban to Dupont.
And this diversity means that a student could come into the program and study anywhere from four to eight primary… in their time here.
And if you learn to write, you have control over when you perform and your momentum never ends. You might be
getting cast and in between when you’re not you can do your own creative projects. And, to casting directors nowadays, that’s really important.
There is a great opportunity at Point Park to be able to work with the Cinema Department to work on student films.
Also because of the tax incentive, there’re a lot of professional projects coming into town and during my time here I’ve been able to work on several studio pictures.
One of the things I’m most proud about our program is that it provides the students with a very, very strong work
ethic and that’s what it takes to survive in the business of theater. You have to know what to do and when to do it and how to do it and our kids get that, they understand that.
That’s the main thing, always be ready to work. You can have your free time but when it’s time to work, come
prepared, know what you’re here for, and stick with it and if you do that, you’ll be successful.
