On May 23, 2010 I was part of a team who filmed a minke whale hunt off the Lofoten islands in northern Norway.
At 9:17 at night the whaling vessel Rowenta fired an exploding harpoon at a minke whale.
The harpoon weighs around 15kg and was traveling at more than 70 meters per second.
For the next 22 minutes, we filmed the whaling vessel apparently pursuing the injured whale.
At 10:06 we lost sight of the whaling vessel and the whale.
Then, at 11:30 we filmed the Rowenta firing a second harpoon shot, resulting in a clear kill.
It’s possible that this was the same animal which had been struck earlier
meaning that it suffered from horrific harpoon wounds for more than 2 hours before dying.
The International Whaling Commission is considering a proposal to allow Norway to kill 6,000 whales over the next ten years.
You have 24 hours to tell the Norwegian Prime Minister to stop this unnecessary slaughter.
