17 December is the international
Day To End Violence Against Sex Workers,
when thousands of their supporters get out on the streets
to support them and say stop to the violence against sex workers.
The so-called First World Congress of sex workers was
an art installation of the Slovenian artist Tadej Pogachar,
shown within the 49th Venice biennale.
One of the activities was the red umbrella march.
Sex workers marched on the streets of Venice,
using loudspeakers and red umbrellas, expressing their
difficult working conditions and human rights violations they encounter.
In 2005 the international committee for the rights of sex workers
adopted the red umbrella
as a symbol of the resistance to violence against sex workers.
Something that started as a simple idea developed into
an international symbol for sex workers rights.
Red is the color of beauty, and the umbrella represents
the resistance against natural and human attacks.
It’s a symbol of resistance to attacks from pimps, clients, and
from society which is frequently ignorant, subjective. intolerant.
Today, for the fifth time, the NGOs and civil organizations
in the Republic Of Macedonia who advocate the promotion of
basic human rights and values of sex workers, through specific
activities and campaigns, took part in the celebration of 17 December.
Today is 17 December, the day when we can all say
stop to violence against sex workers.
Stop to the violence against sex workers.
