>> ASHA helps me as an academic.
I think it's the number one organization
that champions the cause of academics in this field,
whether it's audiology or speech pathology.
I'm an audiologist by training, and I'm actively involved
with ASHA in some of the special interest divisions in audiology,
all four of the special interest divisions
in audiology, I work with them.
Also, as a practicing audiologist,
I feel ASHA is our national organization that stands
up for us in Washington.
And I've been to the national office and know
that they stand behind us as far as championing the cause
of hearing loss and speech problems in this field.
I see a lot of elderly people and I fit hearing aids on them.
That's one of my jobs, and I find like a lot
of them are looking for some validation
from a big national organization and ASHA helps us to do that.
I know there's a lot of problems, though,
with the elderly because their hearing aids are not covered
by insurance, they have to pay for it themselves,
and I think if a national organization steps up
and shows the value of some of the things that we do,
one day I hope that our system will not just pay
for the hearing aids but see the value and the quality of life
that people are going to get out of those.
