What is Jugend hackt?
it's a meeting place
for young people from all over Germany
who come here to get to know one another
to work on projects together, further develop themselves
it's pretty fun
especially with everyone else
because otherwise you'd just be sitting alone in your room
and here at Jugend hackt, you actually work with people in a team
you develop an idea together, and carry it out
it's not like at school
where they just try to explain things to you
here you can actually try things out yourself.
In Germany there's already a "Young Musician" event and "Young Scientists"
but what's really missing is "Young Hackers"
I also have the feeling that in Germany
not enough money, or not enough energy is spent on introducing kids to computers
For example, I didn't have computer science at school
So it's all the more important to reinforce this creativity and these very early experiences with computers
and to show people that there's a lot more experience to be gained
and that there many other kids doing similar things
and I believe the school which I was at still doesn't have computer science
and that's exactly what we hope to achieve here
Our group came up with the idea
to make visualizations on the subject of voting and election polling
we programmed a game, Banana Pong
and then made a controller and connected other games to it
You have to keep your hand on the mouse so the electricity comes through.
We're also using Open Data
We integrated a map in our website
which shows the shortest route to the next disabled-friendly restaurant.
Luckily we found a databank
where the city and university geodata was already tagged
we need weather data
and luckily it's freely available on OpenWeatherMaps.
We want to show that when young people get their hands on this data
they can do all sorts of creative things with it
and that can also serve as motivation for politicians to release more data
so that we can use it to improve our society
a lot was new to me
like the gathering of data from the internet
yesterday I was at a very interesting talk about Processing mapping
I learned a new programming language, Javascript
I worked with Python for the first time
which was kind of tricky
but really cool too
and generally all the map-based work
I did HTML at school but only the basics
and working through it all on a project, in a group, that was new
We developed PlateCollect
which is an iPhone app which shows memorial plaques on a map
The data is available as CSV on the Berlin Open Data portal
and the winner of Best in show category is...
PlateCollect!
Thank you very much, and have a safe trip home - and one more round of applause!
