4 News at 10:00. Speaker 2: The nation's top environmental
official in southwest Florida is saying restoring the Everglades is critical to the survival
of the endangered Florida panther. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, at this groundbreaking
today, for the Picayune Strand restoration project, should give panthers back their home.
It's critical for their survival. He says it's also going to be a job creator, and the
project includes building a pump station, which should restore the natural water flow.
Speaker 3: How crucial is this project to the water supply?
Ken Salazar: It's, uh, the heart of the water supply. You know, without having a successful
restoration of the Everglades, uh, we'll have diminished, water supply, and diminished water
quality for the people in south Florida. Speaker 2: When the restoration project is
done, there will be three major pump stations, more than 200 miles of road going to be removed.
