Shelley Shosted: It's really hard to navigate the healthcare system. You (can) feel very
uncomfortable and (don't) know the right resources to turn to. I help make it less complicated,
less confusing, less painful. (super): Shelley Shosted, Member Advocate,
SelectHealth Most of our members are quite surprised that
we would offer to help them find a doctor. Sometimes they know that they're feeling a
certain way, but they won't know what doctor treats that ailment. You have to be able to
listen. A lot of times we'll call doctor's offices for members to make sure that they
can treat certain conditions or see them in the timeframe that they need.
(Sometimes) we go outside of the network and work with doctors to get them the care that
they need, even though they're not one of our panel doctors. The best partis knowing
that you helped somebody get care that they need (to) help them start feeling better quickly.
We're a local company who knows our doctors, knows the area, because we live here, too.
I can give them door-to-door directions from their house. They don't expect you to know
exactly and say, it's next to the gas station on the left, go past that second driveway
and turn in, then go to the backdoor. That usually surprises people.
I believe SelectHealth is different, that we offer services that other insurance companies
can't or won't take the time to offer. When I think of our members, I try to think
of them as my own family. We develop a personal relationship. There are several who I laugh
and joke with, even though their conditions are very serious.
I had a mom who called and she had a daughter who had a condition that had caused her to
have some paralysis on her face so she couldn't smile. And when you're a teenager, that's
a big deal, especially if you're a girl. And we sent her to a doctor out of state to do
a surgery to do some muscle grafting so that she could smile again. to give her back more
than just physical wellbeing, we gave her emotional wellbeing. And that's more satisfying
than probably I could describe when you go home.
It gives me goose bumps.
