Hi, everyone! I would like to introduce you to Miss *** Liquor.
Hi!
Miss ***, I hear you organize an event called
Genderfest. Can you please tell me more?
I can!
Wonderful! So, what is Genderfest?
Genderfest is an all-genders celebration of *** pride that takes place in East Van from
July 25th to August 4th.
That is wonderful! Why do we have Genderfest? Why did you start Genderfest?
I started Genderfest because during Pride 2011 I was flipping through the Pride Guide
looking for events to go to that year, and I was specifically looking for something that
would be all-genders so that I could party and have fun with different people from my
community, and as I went through the Pride Guide I found that all the events were gender
segregated for either men or women, or they were generally family events.
When I added together the cost of all the tickets for the events that I thought about
going to, it worked out to be about $200, and that was not something I wanted to do!
So I decided to spearhead something and produce something that would be an event that I would
want to go to.
Who are the people that work on Genderfest?
Genderfest is primarily organized by me. I'm a pivot point in the centre, and then all
the other staff sort of radiate outwards, like spokes on a wheel. And there's different
individual people who assist with various events, and there's also different community
partners who produce events that partner with Genderfest. So this year, that would be the
All Bodies Swim, the Catherine White Holman Wellness Centre, the Saige Community Food
Bank, and also this year the Transexxxual play party, as well.
This sounds so fabulous! How can the community help? How can we help Genderfest?
Genderfest could use some help with funding! It would really help if people who are able
to make donations would be able to make donations now, in advance of the festival, a couple
of months before, so that we have the capital that we need to move forward and produce this
event without putting a strain on individual people's finances. So, to have that money
in the bank as we head into the event, and then anything that comes up, we're able to
pay for, and cover as it comes up.
How can we find out more about Genderfest?
You can go to the website, www.genderfest.ca, or you can go to the Facebook page, or you
can go look on Twitter.
That sounds wonderful! So remember, everybody: Genderfest this year for Pride!
