In Search of: Submitting a Manuscript to an APA Journal
I have completed my dissertation on how immigration status affects the mental health of children and adolescents, and I am interested in
revising it and submitting it to an appropriate APA-published journal as well as in optimizing my chance of acceptance by making sure I
follow all APA’s submission guidelines.
I create a search in EBSCO limited to PsycARTICLES, APA’s full-text journal database.
Using the Thesaurus, we select the index terms Mental Health and Immigration,
making sure to select the Boolean AND.
We use the age limiter to select young people up to the age of 17.
From the pool of 15 results, I can use the date range selector to limit the search to the past 4 years.
All of the results are necessarily from scholarly journals, as they are only from PsycARTICLES.
Taking a closer look at the Publication title filter, we can find what specific PsycARTICLES journals have been the most active in publishing
this research. In this case, Journal of Family Psychology or Cultural Deversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
If after reviewing the articles, you were interested in submitting your manuscript to this journal, how would you go about it?
If we go to the Publications tab at the top of the page and look for the journal, we see that this is published by the APA.
So let’s go to their website for additional information.
I’ll save you a search for the website and enter its URL: www.apa.org.
The American Psychological Association is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States,
and there is a lot of information on their website!
But its role as publisher is a vital part of its mission, and there is a link at the top of each page for the Publications area of the website.
Once on the Publications page, you’ll find a dedicated Authors and Reviewers Resource Center.
You can check the most recent Journal Statistics and Operations Data,
which will provide information such as the rejection rate of a journal, here Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
There is also a dedicated Manuscript Preparation area designed to help you find information on how to prepare your submission.
Open the Manuscript Submission Instructions for All Authors, and you’ll see that in addition to the instructions that apply to all manuscripts,
you are directed to the specific web page for a journal to which you plan to submit your article.
Once you navigate to that page by going to APA and APA Affiliated Journals,
you’ll find extensive journal-specific information and a Manuscript Submission Portal to that journal’s editorial office.
