Hi, my name is Dr. Steve Minors of Rehab Effects in Austin, Texas. Today we will be discussing
Cold Laser Therapy and effecting certain reflex points on the body. Referring to applied kinesiology
there are various reflex points on the body. Controlling several different areas such as
adrenal function, which is your stress gland or cortical reflex which addresses or pertains
to cortical which is a stress hormone that the adrenal gland secretes. We also have pain
reflex points and the one that we're going to focus on today is called the Flexor Withdrawal
Reflex. That usually occurs when for example, when someone puts their hand on a hot stove.
When that hand is placed on the hot stove, they tend to jerk back. All of the extensor
muscles, those meaning the muscles that allow us to go backward, such as your hamstring
muscle or your buttock muscle and other muscles such as those actually will contract on that
entire side of your body. And the way that happens is that well, we'll look at these
models to help us explain this. This is a model of the neck. This is the right side.
This is the left side. If the right hand touches the hot stove, then it will cause the muscles
or certain muscles on the right side of the body to contract. The response occurs in the
brain on the right side. It goes down through your spinal column in your neck in a certain
pathway referred to as the spinothalamic reticular tract. It's a pain tract that allows our bodies
to detect pain. It will go down into the lumbar spine on the right side and start to come
out right around here. Usually around the fourth level. So if someone were to sprain
their ankle and it's their right ankle, then their going to have pain come into the spinal
tract right around L4 and it's going to go up the spine into the right side of the brain.
Depending on how long the injury may have occurred, say for example if it was a childhood
injury and it was fairly substantial, it potentially can cross the brain by way of what's called
the corpus callosum into the left side of the brain.
