The stuff they show me here, it makes me more interested to go to college and more interested
in the careers I want to study. The current class, I really like it a lot. It teaches
me to interact with other people and that makes me get more friends and more comfortable.
Mini-courses is a fairly large department. We actually run six different programs out
of our office. The Mini-course Summer Exploration Camp is basically a two-week summer program
where the first week they focus on math and science. This year theyre doing forensic science
and investigative math.
I did it three years in middle school and all four years in high school. Now I come
back pretty much every year after Ive done the program to help Patricia out with whatever
she needs to do. I really like working with kids because I get to mentor. I like to mentor
and teach them the lessons that I learned. I knew what I always wanted to do: business,
always wanted to do business. But, as far as being prepared no, until I actually started
coming to the program. I thought when I came here I would just be in one classroom but
Ive been all around UWM. Thats what I really liked. I liked being like a real college student.
I think ill be way ahead of people.
A lot of the students we serve are eligible for free or reduced lunch so then they would
also be eligible for other different types of resources that could also help them financially
to make it possible for them to go to college. You know its not saying you have to come to
this university particularly, but are you thinking about college? Is this something
that is realistic? Its really bringing the family in with the expectations, just really
raising the bar. Then, along with those high expectations, letting them know that it is
possible and then really connecting them to the different resources. Being comfortable,
having those connections, the students potentially will also come here to UW-Milwaukee. I think
it can be a life changer. I think it makes all the difference in the world.
