Hi, this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute.
After years of discussion and planning, construction of the new Ohio River Downtown Crossing is
underway in Louisville.
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signaled the start of construction by raising the American,
Kentucky and Indiana flags on a large crane that will help build the Downtown Crossing.
The flag raising was part of a community groundbreaking held at Louisville's Waterfront Park.
The family-friendly event encouraged children to be part of history by breaking ground with
commemorative shovels on a large sand pile near the construction site.
The Downtown Crossing has multiple sections -- construction of a new bridge between Louisville
and Jeffersonville, Indiana, plus reconstruction of the Kennedy Memorial Bridge; new bridge
approaches on the Indiana side, and improvements to the Kennedy Interchange in downtown Louisville.
Total cost: About $1.3 billion.
The Downtown Crossing is scheduled for completion in 2016. It's one-half of a larger project
that includes construction of a new bridge upriver to complete the 265 loop around greater
Louisville and Southern Indiana.
