(Band playing) Various voices speaking: "To put up any barrier to voting is just wrong.
Political leaders, they changed the face of the communities so you have to be a part of
that process. It's also gonna give us a disbelief in the system once again and we just started
believing in the system." Title: Their Voice Is Their Power, Florida Law Blocks The Vote
Yvette Lewis, Political Action Chair speaking: "I started registering people at the parks.
The most heartwarming part is when , you would have a young guy come to you and say,'I would
like to register to vote.'. It just really touches my heart and I had so many young African-American
men saying,'I want to vote.'" Man speaking: "So I'm taking this time out of the day on
Martin Luther King Day to re rest and be a good example for the next generation coming
up." Christopher Cano, Vice Chair of the Hillsborough
County Democratic Hispanic Caucus speaking: "If you have someone who's from the community
who can speak the dialect, who can speak the language who looks like them, walks like them
and talks like them. Sure, they'll have no problem. The problem with the new voter registration laws
in Florida is that the penalties that they impose for the smallest minute errors that
previously weren't there. Just making it very cumbersome for any non-profit or any third-party
to want to go out and register voters. You're gonna see old people missing out, see young
people missing out, see new citizens missing out."
Belinthia Berry, National Coalition of 100 Black Women speaking: "It will really hurt
and affect just the community as a whole, because they cant put their voice out there
of who they would want as their leader." Christopher Cano speaking: "Voter registration
was really big in the 2008 election. People participated at record numbers. In the end,
its not about encumbrance and its not about political parties, its about Americans participating
in their democracy." Yvette Lewis speaking: "Its is very important
for African-Americans to know that their voice is their power and their power is their vote."
