This year in the Menomonee Valley was all about getting our newest branch ready to open in September of 2012.
We broke ground for this site on September 7th, 2011, and we spent the whole year getting it ready to go.
We turned a dilapidated tavern into our newest branch.
This building became a home for our third environmental community center, complete
with reused building materials, flexible learning and gathering spaces, as well as ecologically-minded
features, such as our geothermal heating and cooling system. Plus, we have to have a slide!
We hired an incredibly dynamic and well-balanced team to staff our newest branch and we've
spent a lot of time making connections in our community.
Our work in the Menomonee Valley extends far beyond the Center itself. This place is part of a much larger campaign,
called From the Ground Up. This year that project hit another major milestone as we
broke ground in the 24-acre brown field turned green space that's adjacent to this building.
In summer of 2013, that place will open as a new park for this community. It will include a mile of the
Hank Aaron State Trail, new habitat for native plants and animals, as well as biking and walking paths.
It will also become the outdoor classroom for the Urban Ecology Center.
We're excited to be settling in to our new home in the Valley.
